Texas A&M's All-Time Depth Chart: Quarterbacks, Running Backs & Receivers

May 28, 2019

Throughout its football history Texas A&M has produced a veritable galaxy of celebrated stars.

Some won national awards. Dozens received All-American recognition. Literally hundreds have been named to all-conference teams, some multiple times. A handful never were adequately honored for their accomplishments.

A few of these stars made immediate impacts as freshmen. Some developed into standouts as sophomores or juniors. There were even those that did not emerge until their senior seasons.

They arrived as five-, four-, ,three- or two-star high school recruits. They transferred from other major college programs. They came from junior college.

Some played in the Southwest Conference. Others played in the Big 12 or the Southeastern Conference. They played in the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and into the 2000s.

A number played before platoon football. Some started at one position and moved to another. There were those that excelled on offense, some on defense, some on special teams.

Some were great in college and greater in the pros. Some had long NFL careers. Some had brief tenures as professionals. Some were All-Pros. One was even a Super Bowl MVP.

They were black, white, bi-racial and even Vietnamese. Some were from the inner city. Others were from rural areas. Most were from Texas, though many came from out of state.

Yet, at least one thing they had in common was the fact they were listed high on the depth chart — football’s hierarchy that designates first team, second team and third team.

With that in mind, TexAgs is unveiling in four stages its All-Time Texas A&M football depth chart.

First, we’ll look at offensive skill positions, followed by offensive linemen and tight ends, then defensive front seven and concluding with secondary and special teams.

Of course, when star gazing individuals might focus on different constellations. Check the stars on the TexAgs depth chart to determine if they’d be the stars on yours.

Johnny Manziel was a program-changing QB for A&M, winning the Heisman in the Aggies’ first year in the SEC.

Robert Wilson (1988-90): Powerful lead blocker paved the way for Darren Lewis to exceed 1,690 rushing yards in 1988 and 1990. Though Wilson didn’t run often, he still rushed for 1,739 yards in his career.

Jack Pardee (1954-56): All-American. All-Southwest Conference.

Running Backs (6)

Williams rushed for a school record 1,760 yards in ’18 and completed his three-season career with 3,615 yards, the third-highest total in school history. He rushed for 34 career touchdowns, which ties for fifth-highest in school history.

Darren Lewis ran through defenses in the late 80s when the Aggies were a Southwest Conference power.

Darren Lewis (1987-90): Two-time All-American and All-Southwest Conference. Lewis had two of the three highest single-season rushing totals in A&M history. He was second in the nation in rushing in 1988 and third in ’89. He completed his career with a record 5,012 rushing yards and has the second-highest rushing touchdowns total of 44.

Wide Receivers (6)

TexAgs
Mike Evans dominated defenders and rewrote the A&M record book for receivers.

Mike Evans (2012-13): All-American and All-SEC. Accumulated 2,499 career receiving yards and 151 career receptions despite playing just two seasons. Holds or shares A&M records for single-game receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and single-season receiving yards.

Ryan Swope (2009-12): One of just two players named All-Big 12 and All-SEC. A&M’s career leader in receptions with 252 and receiving yards with 3,117. He’s fourth all-time with 24 touchdown catches.

Terrence Murphy (2001-2004): All-Big 12. Accumulated 172 career receptions for 2,600 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Jeff Fuller (2008-11): All-Big 12. Holds A&M record with 34 career touchdown receptions. Second all-time with 3,092 receiving yards and third all-time with 233 career receptions.

These lists are always open to discussion but Olin did a pretty good job on this one.

Robert Ferguson was better than Fuller or Murphy IMO.

He was. But he was only here for 1 season too, which understandably hamstrings him on any "all time team".

So Jace Sternberger shouldn't receive consideration either ? Have to disagree.

While I agree that fuller belongs on the list considering he holds the record for td catches, it came to the point where that man was falling down before he even caught the ball. I'd love to know what his yac's were, especially at the end of his career.

You may not like him as a person and because of the Kyler fiasco but in pads on the field he was one helluva player.

These discussions are fun and signal 2 a days are not far off. Tannehill & Kubiak are worthy of consideration. Tanny played out of position as receiver - great team player. Kubes may not beat out JFF or Bucky, but he was one hell of a QB for his time. Ferguson was one of the best ever.

Certainly some recency bias w/ the WRs. It's tough to compare today's game w/ 20+ years ago. But just using the eye test, Robert Ferguson was easily one of the best we've ever had. Dude could flat out catch the ball. He'd put up Mike Evans numbers in today's system.

WR list is bogus. Evans of course is #1 but no Robert Fergusan? Ruins the list. And Albert Connell should be on list to well above some of the others.

you know...one of the requirements to be an all-time great aggie football player (for the players from the SWC & Big 12 eras)...gotta have done something big vs. the burnt orange.

that's why you don't see RF or Connell on the WR list. RF was hurt and never played vs. the horns; and A.C. was a ghost in both of his games against t.u.

This is a very good list that must have been tough to put together.
The only change I would make and it was discussed...I'd put Kimbrough in place of Bean.
I saw Bean play and will never forget the '75 Texas game, but A&M might not have been the '39 NC w/o Big Jarrin John.

Exactly Right!
Voted one of the best games ever in the SWC was the A&M win over Baylor at Waco.
Go revisit that game highlights and you'll see what Kevin brought to the table.
IMO I'd put him ahead of the Buck at #2.

Glad Josh Reynolds is getting love here. He was my favorite WR of the Sumlin era (even over Swope, Evans and Kirk). So consistently clutch

Corey Pullig, 33-6-1. Won 10 or 11 games each year he started all games. Only thing holding him back was Slocum's Gulf Coast Offense...

I like Tiki a lot, but we probably have 3 better RBs on the roster today.

Maybe this list should be broken down into SWC, Big 12, and SEC all-time teams. That may help account some for the different eras. Of course, the SWC years might be a little more complicated because of the length of the era.

He rushed for less than 500 yds per season. In today's game, it's doubtful he even sees the field.

Honestly, most of those guys wouldn't. It's a totally different class of athlete today, for the most part.

Although injured early in the season, Crow was able to play in seven games in his senior season. He rushed for 562 yards on 129 carries, with six touchdowns. Crow also caught two passes and passed for five touchdowns. While playing on defense, he intercepted the ball five times.During the 1957 season, Bryant famously quipped, "If John David Crow doesn't win the Heisman Trophy, they ought to stop giving it.

Who paid you to write "Kevin Murray" on the QB list??

JDC is better.

Reggie McNeal is better.

Kyle Allen is better.

You have other options. Just sayin'.
Thanks and Gig'em!

You have no clue. Kevin Murray is #2 on the list and it's not even close. Also, JDC wasn't a quarterback.
