Key notes from Billy's analysis on Leal
- I've been saying this the whole offseason: I said he has a real shot to be the best player on A&M's team this year. You saw him last year get better and better.
- He hurt his knee during spring ball last year. He would've probably been a starter earlier in his freshman season if that didn't happen. Then, he played with a club early in the year because he had a broken hand. That held him back, and he still made his presence felt.
- A&M played outstanding football down the stretch. Part of the reason A&M pulled that comeback off against Oklahoma State in the Texas Bowl was because of how DeMarvin Leal played. He dominated that offensive line. He was incredible. He was so impactful.
- I remember A&M coming off the field at halftime of the bowl game. There were a lot of down faces and heads hanging. The loudest guy with the most pep in his step was DeMarvin Leal. He set a tone for that team that came out and dominated in the second half.
- As a true freshman, he was the guy you were hoping that the rest of the team would follow his lead. He was an energetic guy. They fed off of his energy in the second half of that bowl game. I think that is going to carry over from just one game to the entire season this year.
- This guy is good enough — regardless if he's at end or inside — that everyone is going to have a tough time blocking him. That includes Alabama, Florida and LSU. DeMarvin Leal is going to kick a lot of asses this year.
- I think he has All-SEC potential this year. I think he's got All-American potential in his junior year. Down the line, I believe he has early first-round draft potential. He could absolutely be the best defensive lineman in the SEC before his career in Aggieland is done.
- Look no further than what Mike Elko did with Justin Madubuike, Kingsley Keke or Bobby Brown with moving them around. I don't think any of those guys were as equipped to move around quite like DeMarvin is. Leal won't dip his shoulder like Von Miller, but he'll get plenty of pressure lining up at end. He'll be especially effective on the inside. Leal is an incredibly disruptive force on the defensive line.
- Because of how hard he works and how great of a kid he is, you fully expect DeMarvin to reach his potential. There are no question marks with him off the field or in the weight room. Combine that work ethic with his talent; there is no doubt that he will be a great player. He already is a great player, just not enough people outside of the A&M sphere have taken notice yet.
