Aggies complete sweep of No. 23 South Carolina with 2-1 Sunday win
First SEC series sweep since April of 2018.
By taking down No. 23 South Carolina, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon, Texas A&M earned its first conference sweep since the Aggies’ 2018 series with Auburn in the opening games at Davis Diamond.
A&M head coach Jo Evans said getting the sweep is a reminder of the great atmosphere at home.
“[The Auburn] sweep was such a big sweep and series win for us to open Davis Diamond,“ Evans said. “It’s just a reminder for what it feels like to play here. There’s just some magic to being on that field with our fans and this team this year.”
Freshman outfielder Bre Warren highlighted Sunday’s contest. The College Station native recorded her first career home run in her hometown. Warren said that notching her first career home run in Davis Diamond fulfilled a childhood dream.
“It is like a dream come true,” Warren said. “I’ve always been excited to come to A&M and play, so I feel like it was a big relief for me to do that.”
Warren was also responsible for A&M’s other run, which came in the bottom of the fifth on an infield single that allowed junior outfielder and pinch-runner Madi Jatzlau to cross home plate.
The Gamecocks’ lone run came during the top of the seventh. Prior to the final frame, South Carolina had managed only two hits, both of which were back-to-back bunts in the second.
In the circle for the Aggies was junior Makinzy Herzog, who tossed a complete game and punched out seven.
“I thought [Herzog] was really good today,” Evans said. “She’s a kid who can get a big strikeout when you need it. Those are hard to come by.”
A&M improved to 23-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Evans said that a sweep is tough to come by.
“Getting a sweep, I don’t care who you’re playing; if that team is playing well, or is not playing well,” Evans said. “It’s really tough to sweep an opponent. You look across the board in our conference, and it rarely happens.”
Next up for the Maroon & White is a three-game road series against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which opens Thursday, April 1. First pitch of the opener is set for 5:00 p.m.
