Texas A&M hoping to avoid hangover game with Missouri on Saturday

Menudo, biscuits and water — lots and lots of water — may be on the breakfast menu for Texas A&M’s pre-game meal on Saturday.

They’re allegedly good for curing hangovers.

The Aggies (4-2, 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference) are riding high after posting a 41-38 college football victory over then-No. 1 Alabama last week.

That’s what worries coach Jimbo Fisher. He knows Missouri (3-3, 0-2) can cause severe headaches if the Aggies still have that victory on their minds.

The Aggies face the Tigers at 11 a.m. CT at Columbia’s Faurot Field.

“They’re going to be right there ready for us, waiting for us to knock us off,” Fisher said. “This is a trap game. You (can’t) listen to all the stuff all week and live in the past. That’s over with.

“We’ve got to play well. Those things don’t mean anything if you don’t carry it on and learn from your lessons.”

The lesson he hopes the Aggies learned is they can beat any opponent, but only if they are physical on defense and execute with precision on offense.

And if they don’t overlook an opponent.

There could be a temptation to take a win over Missouri for granted. The Tigers are 0-3 against Power 5 opponents and were thrashed by Tennessee, 62-24, just two weeks ago.

Also, they rank dead last in the nation in run defense, allowing an average of 288.3 rushing yards per game. Three running backs have posted their career-high rushing totals against the Tigers.

That suggests A&M running backs Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane could put up eye-popping statistics.

Fisher pumped the breaks, though.

He pointed out Missouri was tied in the fourth quarter with No. 11 Kentucky before falling 35-28. The Tigers also lost in overtime to Boston College (4-1).

Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak has passed for 1,690 yards and 12 touchdowns in coach Eli Drinkwitz’s offense.

Meanwhile, running back Tyler Badie has rushed for 667 yards. The Tigers are fifth in the SEC in total offense, ahead of Arkansas and Mississippi State, which beat A&M.

Drinkwitz is in his second season as the head coach in Columbia.

“They provide different pressures. They blitz. They mix up their coverages on defense,” Fisher said. “On offense, (Drinkwitz’s) running schemes, his counters, his stretches, his play-action … He’s a great trick play guy. He’s always got eye violations and constant motions. They’re very dynamic on offense and physical on defense.”

Of course, A&M was something of an offensive dynamo in the win over Alabama.

Quarterback Zach Calzada broke out of a slump to pass for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Ainias Smith caught two of the scoring passes. Tight end Jalen Wydermyer had one.

Spiller ran for a touchdown. Achane returned a kickoff for a score. The offensive line was solid.

Also, the defense accumulated four sacks and forced two turnovers.

Despite that showing, Spiller vowed the Aggies aren’t looking back or too far ahead.

“I don’t want to look forward,” Spiller said. “One game at a time. I think Missouri is a great team. I feel like we have to come out ready to play even though it’s an early game.”
