Aggie baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle recaps College Station Regional
What a weekend. Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle joined Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio to reflect on the Aggies winning the College Station Regional, hosting supers at Olsen Field and more.
Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview
- It's been awesome. So proud of our team. To think that we'd be in this position a few months ago. I remember having a discussion about things we were doing well, things we needed to do better and how we were going to do it. Number one was competitive grit. To think that I questioned that at any point this season is pretty amazing. I can't quite remember a team that has evolved the way this one has.
- The 12th Man was fantastic. You and I have talked about the atmosphere. It was a bit of a back and forth early on trying to blend the atmosphere of Kyle Field with the great traditions of Olsen Field. I think we found that. I remember at one point looking at coach Chuck Box and taking note of how much the place was rocking during a pitching change. Need everbody to bring a friend and come back and do it again next weekend.
- Ryan Targac's play in the bottom of the eighth 100-percent gets lost in the shuffle because of what the ninth inning became. It's easy to forget it when you talk about playing the game one pitch at a time; every run matters—saving them defensively and scoring them offensively. Ryan's play certainly was huge, keeping it at a one-run game.
- It's hard to manage to practice time and get guys rest. If I was sitting in the stands, I would wonder if we ever practiced defense. We have to find more ways and get more creative in making those practice reps game-like. In the drills, we field bunts every day. But not with the pressure in that moment. The thing that bothers me more is not executing the double play because we were in the shift. We miscommunicated and missed the bag and got nobody out. The kids are super competitive. If we ever get the right mix of pitching and fielding the baseball, we could win a national title.
- For the most part, the guys just get back in the dugout and go to work. Austin Bost came in and laced the ball at the shortstop's chest, and it was on from there. This team just moves on to the next play. That's a credit to the kids.
- A lot of the talking with the umpires comes downs to relationships. The umpires the last two games, I had no relationship with. If you see me walk out there, it's trying to establish a dialogue. Sometimes I would just go out there and ask where it was. It’s a tough job, no doubt. I just want consistency. Sometimes it feels like it goes against you all the time, though.
- Brad Rudis... I’ll be honest, it just hit me right now that I pitched him three nights in a row. I wanted to get our best strike-thrower in the bullpen in the that’s not Jacob Palisch. I thought Chris Cortez was a little bit of an unsung hero last night. I think he slowed the game down. Brad Rudis has just been phenomenal for us. There were times that he didn’t pitch, but he’s just super confident and not afraid to ask for the ball.
