Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White
TexAgs' recruiting analyst Ryan Brauninger joined TexAgs Radio this morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail after a huge recruiting weekend.
Key notes from Recruiting Country
- It was so important that you won that Miami game. Every kid, the first thing they talked about was the atmosphere was “amazing, incredible, nothing you'd ever seen before.” The defensive guys were pumped up about the way they played. Ashton Funk and Colton Thomasson liked the direction of the o-line and coach Addazio.
- Hykeem Williams remains to be seen. We heard extremely positive things. and we are confident in where A&M stands. We've also heard positive Florida State talk. Whoever he picks this weekend, I don't think his recruitment is over. It's up in the air. We’re going through the hoops trying to figure out more.
- If A&M lands Hykeem, it's in the realm of Evan Stewart and Chris Marshall’s commitments. He's 6-4, 200, long and rangy. Not as long as Noah Thomas and not as big as Marshall. He’s a phenomenal player and one of the top receivers in the country. Getting Hykeem would elevate that receiver room.
- I interviewed David Hicks, and he wanted to see if the linemen were going to play. A&M is showing him that those freshmen linemen are playing. Hykeem sees that, and you wish Evan and Chris would have played on Saturday to see them in the offense. Putting those freshmen on the field this year strengthens your recruiting pitch.
- Tony Mitchell has a relationship with A&M’s recruiting class and guys like Bobby Taylor. It's a long play against Nick Saban. Andy Jean is committed to Florida, and A&M is playing the long game with him. It feels like A&M is nipping on Alabama’s heels for Mitchell. You have to play the long game in that recruitment.
- When you look at Saturday and the number of players that were out of the game, it was north of 13 players. You made a change at QB, and you expect a veteran to get better as you go. You have to go on the field and prove it to recruits.
- Micah Tease, committed to Arkansas, had a great time this weekend. He posted a visit picture, and there are a lot of interactions with Aggie fans and A&M players. You could tell he formed a relationship with her this weekend. If A&M beats Arkansas this weekend, it gets real.
- A&M is the home team so they can invite players but they cannot have contact with them. You expect a bunch of DFW kids to be there. We should have a visitor list out by tomorrow.
- Hicks had a great time. It was back-to-back weekends. He met with coach Robinson, Price and Fisher at length in their offices. There were things he was keeping his eye on during those visits and A&M answered some questions.
- People assuming that Derek (DJ) Lagway will pick A&M because he’s a kid from Willis, right down the road, is extremely premature. He has been recruited by everybody across the country. He has a strong affinity for LSU, Alabama and Florida. A&M has a fight on their hands. You can’t make the assumption that they will get a DJ.
