Week Five's Overnight Sensation: Moose Muhammad III, Wide Receiver
Each Monday during the 2022 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance over the weekend and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’
Moose with the juice.
With star wide receiver Ainias Smith sidelined with a season-ending injury, Texas A&M needed members of its receiving corps to step up.
In the Aggies’ disappointing loss in Starkville against Mississippi State, Muhsin “Moose” Muhammad III emerged as the team’s leading receiver and recorded the first 100-yard receiving game of his career.
Before Saturday, the wideout only had one reception against Sam Houston in the season opener. Last week against Arkansas, Muhammad caused a couple of penalties and had a crucial drop in what looked to be an easy touchdown pass.
Yet, Muhammad bounced back against the Bulldogs, recording six receptions for 119 yards and his first touchdown of the season.
Though there were minimal signs of life on offense, A&M’s and Muhammad’s longest catch of the day was a 36-yarder in the third quarter, which also happened to be the team’s first third-down conversion.
Later in the drive, the sophomore had a nice 18-yard grab over a Bulldog defender to score A&M’s first touchdown.
Due to Smith’s injury, the North Carolina native also took on punt return duties but looks to improve after only tallying 22 yards.
Whether it's Max Johnson or Haynes King at quarterback, production from Muhammad is now a necessary component for the Aggies to succeed in the SEC.
