Texas A&M Football
* He’s on staff for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is working at a chapel for the Atlanta Falcons. Last season was his first working for them, but it was someone challenging because of the NFL lockout. It was challenging to get to know some of the guys on the team the way he wanted to because they were trying to get ready for the football season in such a short period of time.
* The role he has with FCA and the Falcons has been very different than what he expected. He had thought that he had football out of his system after retiring about a year and a half ago, but going to games and standing on the sideline right before kickoff seemed to reignite that competitive spark within him. Since he was eight years old, when it came to athletics, everything was scheduled for him but now being retired from the game he’s had to learn to make his own schedule which has been different for him and he’s had to adjust to having a different routine.
* Being around the game is something that is and will always be a part of him. He really enjoys coaching and helping guys get better which is something that he feels is just part of you after being around the game for so long. His oldest son is eight years old and he hopes that he can soon be a coach to him at the Pop Warner level.
* The time he spent in Aggieland was some of the best years of his life because of the friendships and bonds that he built with the other players and coaches. One of the most memorable moments of his life can at Kyle Field against Texas in 1999 after the Bonfire had fallen. Being down at the half and then coming back to win the game as a team was very emotional and will always be remembered.
* He has talked to former teammate Jay Brooks, who is a cop in Atlanta, about two or three times since moving to Georgia and Brooks enjoys what he is doing and is doing well.
* When recovering punts kicked by Shane Lechler, he remembers his hamstrings always being on fire because he had to run so hard to get to the ball that was blasted so far away. He thinks that Lechler should be in the NFL Hall of Fame because of the consistency and the longevity he has had as one of if not the best punters in the league.
* When he got drafted, all he wanted to do was play football. He wasn’t thinking about how many years he would play, and it wasn’t until his ninth season in the league that he started thinking about wanting ‘one more year’ just to make it an even 10 seasons. Looking back on the nine seasons he played, he’s thankful that he was able to play that long without any major injuries and for all of the friendships he was able to build in that time. During that time, he was also able to learn a lot about himself and how he could face adversity when the time came.
* The afternoon after Bonfire fell in 1999, the team was supposed to have a practice, but a couple of guys got together, himself included, and approached Coach Slocum about going out and helping clean up what was left of the stack instead. Slocum thought it was a good idea and let the team go help out with picking up the logs. Later that day, the team had a meeting and Slocum and he was chosen to represent the team when the media came calling. He was very intimidated and had no idea what to say, but still felt honored and privileged to be chosen to represent the football team.
* The guys that played with him and who are now coaching are all great guys. He talks to Cornelius Anthony on a regular basis and he enjoys seeing other guys he played with on the sidelines doing what they love to do. He really enjoys getting to talk to any of those guys and catching up with what they are up to now. The team enjoyed being around each other and playing together, which made them play that much harder for one another.
* He is also working with people of all ages, from junior high aged up to 50 year old men, and is training them to be a better athlete. He got into training because he wanted to do something that wasn’t too far from home, which for him is being an athlete and staying in good physical shape. He also enjoys meeting with people one-on-one and pushing them harder to achieve the lofty goals that they have set for themselves.
* He’s excited for the SEC move because he will now have more of an opportunity to see the team play. He also thinks it’s a great move because while the Big 12 is a great conference, the SEC is the SEC. The SEC always seems to be the conference to beat and he sees nothing but good things for A&M by becoming a part of that.
* He defines the Wrecking Crew as a group of guys that had a common goal of stopping the opposing offense and getting the ball back. The Wrecking Crew proved that no matter what the circumstances were on the field, the defense was going to do whatever it takes to stop them and get the ball back to the offense. He was honored to be a part of the Wrecking Crew and he believes that the A&M defense can get back to having that swagger that he and his teammates had. It’s not as much about having the right personnel to do so as it is having the right mentality. If the defense can get that mentality back, there is no reason the Wrecking Crew can’t come back to Kyle Field.
