Only five regular-season ballgames remain for Trisha Ford's Aggies
No. 23 Texas A&M is back at Davis Diamond on Tuesday afternoon as the Maroon & White play host to Prairie View A&M. With just five regular-season games remaining, Trisha Ford & Co. are looking to wrap up the 2023 campaign on a high note.
Key notes from Trisha Ford interview
- It's crazy that this season is almost over. I feel like that's what happens. You blink, and then all of a sudden, we're getting close to the SEC Tournament and postseason.
- We had a good weekend this past weekend at Ole Miss. We had a tough one on Friday, but we battled back to take the series. We have Prairie View A&M coming up on Tuesday afternoon. We have to be ready to come out and play. Every weekend is a tough one, but it's getting us ready for the hard stuff.
- It’s vital for us to be a proactive team. Scoring first, early on and continuing to score has been something that has worked well for us. It was definitely a battle and not the best conditions in Oxford, but we are used to that. I wasn’t too happy on Friday, and I called them in for a good talk. I thought we did a great job responding on Saturday and Sunday, especially on Sunday.
- It was a pretty heated series overall. I enjoyed it though. After Sunday, first of all, our plays made the last statement, and we also all banded together to beat Ole Miss. That feeling is like nothing else. It's you against the world. That is what you will remember. You will remember games like this not because of your wins and losses, but it's the experience.
- We played clean defense. Our offense was really locked in. Our pitching was good enough. You know we have a lot of arms and a lot of good looks, so if we need to switch someone out, we have a pitcher that can pick it up. We have so much depth.
- Trinity Cannon, she's getting it. I don't know how else to put it. She's diving into the game and the skillset. She’s figuring out what works and what doesn't. Trinity, Julia Cottrill and Rylen Wiggins, it's imperative that I get on them more than others because they are the face of the team. They have to be able to take it, but it's starting to show and blossom. Cannon is understanding her position on the team as a whole.
- Wiggins can run the infield, and she has a calming effect about her. She's a leader on and off the field. She can go down swinging. She’s had a leadership voice on the team, and you can really see her growth. She sounds different, and she looks different. It's intriguing to me to watch how their personalities change as they grow through the season.
- Star Ferguson is someone who has been working hard and working on her craft. She's committed to working on her skill. She came in this weekend and had a fantastic game for us. She is someone on this team who hasn't maybe gotten to play as much as she would like, but when her name is called, she’s ready. That shows.
- Heading into the postseason and the schedule being what it is, we've been there and done that. We've played the No.1 team, the No.2 team and pretty much No.1-10. We know what it looks like and feels like, so I'm excited to see how we respond.
- We lead the SEC in walks. We work hard on our strike recognition when we practice. We work on being aggressive early in the count and then shrinking the zone because I think that is when pitchers start to fade. We reverse things in that way by starting aggressively and shrinking it later in the count.
