Notes from Gary Blair and Van Chancellor interview

* Blair and Chancellor go back a long time and Blair remembers a game against his Ole Miss team while at Stephen F. Austin that was nearly cancelled due to snow.

* Chancellor knows that anytime anyone plays Blair in golf, the question is not who won, but how much money is owed to Blair.

* Chancellor reminisces about a game while he was at Ole Miss and Blair was at Arkansas in which he had a five point lead with 2.7 seconds left in the game. After an attempt at the “Christian Laettner” play that successfully earned a three pointer, Blair’s Razorbacks were down by two with 0.3 seconds left. Knowing that you can’t get a shot off in 0.3 seconds, Blair knew that he had to draw a foul and was able to get a charge before the ball was inbounded. The Razorbacks had a 91% free throw shooter at the line with a chance to tie the game. After making the first one, the second free throw rimmed in and out, saving Chancellor from an embarrassing loss.

* Everyone Chancellor knows in College Station and in Texas are pumped up about the move to the SEC. The only person who isn’t pumped up is the head football coach because he has to play teams like LSU and Alabama. He notices that there have been a bunch of offensive commitments thus far, but thinks that he needs to find someone to stop the Alabama rushing attack.

* Winning the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics was an unbelievable experience. He cried a little bit when the team was introduced during the pregame because he was so happy to be coaching his country’s national team. The pressure really mounts as the game gets going, and he remembers looking up and seeing Larry Brown, the coach of the men’s team that year, look like his wife had died because the team had lost the day before. His starting point guard picked up two fouls in the first 45 seconds of the game, but was able to eventually win the game. The best feeling in the world is being able to represent your country in the gold medal game.

* Chancellor believes that Blair is one of the most respected coaches in the country. Sometimes when you win, it creates jealousy among your colleagues, but from the respect that Blair has earned over the years, that jealousy was nonexistent after A&M won the national championship in 2011. Blair has given so much to the game and he deserves the respect that he gets.

* Chancellor has never seen a coach be as involved with his team as Blair is. The Special Olympics, who the golf tournament was benefitting, owes Blair a lot because of the time he has put into making the event the best it could possibly be. Most coaches are figureheads when it comes to these types of tournaments, but Blair has put in the work himself to make the event special.

* Chancellor believes that Logan Lee has outkicked the coverage and is way over-married in every department by marrying the former Katy Pounds, including looks and intelligence.

* A&M will be fine in football in the SEC because the coaching staff will rise to the challenge. There are a lot of players that are going to want to play in the SEC, so A&M will start getting players than they have in the past. If people ever get the chance to go to a game at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, they will find it to be the most unique football experience ever. People need to be ready to fork over the money for tickets to road games because that’s where people will want due to the great time always had.

Thanks for this, Gabe!

I am really interested in Women's BB future upon hearing Coach Blair's comments after the Bill Byrne press conference.

I've been in a blue funk about Byrne's leaving. He is taking the rap for decisions I think he didn't make. Wish I had more faith that we would find an adequate replacement (and NO!! not one of the good ole boys).
