Mariners select LHP Brandyn Garcia 337th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft
On Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners selected Texas A&M left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia in the 11th round, 337th overall of the 2023 MLB Draft.
A transfer from Quinnipiac, Garcia spent just one year in College Station before attracting the attention of professional scouts as a hard-throwing lefty out of Jim Schlossnagle's bullpen.
During his only season in Maroon & White, Garcia made 27 relief appearances and compiled a 3-3 record with a 5.56 ERA in 43.2 innings. He also picked up one save and boasted a 56-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Late in the campaign, Garcia emerged as a trusted arm late in ballgames, and he appeared four times during A&M's postseason run between the SEC Tournament and Stanford Regional.
Borning in Newport, Rhode Island, and raised in Granby, Connecticut, Garcia spent the first three years of his collegiate career at Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut. While pitching for the Bobcats, Garcia spent time as both a reliever and starter. A two-time MAAC All-Academic selection, he was 5-13 with a 5.57 ERA in 24 appearances, including 19 starts.
For his collegiate career, Garcia was 8-16 with a 5.93 ERA across 148.2 innings in 51 appearances.
Should he choose to reject Seattle’s offer, Garcia could return to Aggieland for a fifth season of collegiate baseball.
Ryan Brauninger's scout of Brandyn Garcia
"Big-bodied left-hander with electric stuff. Had issues with command for the majority of his college career or he would have been a professional much sooner. Started to get a better feel for the strike zone in the back half of 2023, which is when his stock really began to take off for MLB scouts as he began to mow through some of the best hitters in the SEC. Primarily attacks hitters with a two-pitch mix. Fastball has great ride/carry and has been up to 97 mph. The spin rate and axis on the slider are outstanding. Has to continue to improve his feel and command. Right now, his repertoire will pitch himself into and out of jams."
