Press Conference: Fisher's Aggies still grinding through Fall Camp
Texas A&M enters its third week of Fall Camp as the Aggies continue to prepare for their Sept. 2 opener with New Mexico at Kyle Field. On Monday afternoon, head coach Jimbo Fisher spoke to the media to provide an update on the Maroon & White's efforts on the practice field.
The following are live, paraphrased notes from Jimbo Fisher’s Monday afternoon media availability:
- A lot of times, offense and defense switch off dominating. When you have great teams, there is competitive greatness. It’s like having two great boxers go at it. The great teams do it. I am seeing that this camp. There has been a practice or two that one got the best of the other. There have been counterpunches. Minimize the damage. When you have more experienced guys, you are learning to see the qualities better.
- Last weekend’s scrimmage will be the last scrimmage. No major injuries. Both sides of the ball made plays when both guys did it right. There was a lot more consistency.
- We have not announced a quarterback. Both Conner Weigman and Max Johnson made plays. I was very pleased, and Jaylen Henderson and Marcel Reed did a great job as well.
- I have been able to spend more time on things that a normally back and forth. I’ve been more help with recruiting. Also, special teams and the future plans of the organization and the staff. It frees you up at times, and you can look at different things offensively. You can communicate more with boosters and donors. I can speak more. It can enhance teaching as a coach. You have more time to meet with a player privately and pull them into your office.
- This offseason has been fun. People always doubt you. As an athlete, people doubt you. I don’t worry about what people think. I know what we can do. You slip up one time. That’s part of the business that I like.
- Chase Bisontis is mature physically and emotionally. I have been pleased with our whole freshman class. It’s not because of a lack of other players. The freshmen have the ability to make plays.
- I have been most pleased with the consistency. They have played faster, quicker and more physical. All position groups are still a battle.
- The recruiting director is not doing all the recruiting. The coaches are still deciding about recruits. Those things come through us.
- You are in the best conference in the country. It’s great. You aren’t traveling across three time zones. That is tough for college athletes.
- The running backs were running well. All those guys have talent. Amari Daniels, Rueben Owens and Le’Veon Moss all made plays. I want to see a guy make a 3-yard run and a 6-yard run. Those guys had a really good day Saturday. David Bailey and Ernest Crownover have done a good job.
- Taurean York is really mature. He is 18 going 30. He has had a really good camp.
- Reuben Fatheree scrimmaged. Bryce Foster should be ready to go this week.
- I’m pleased with our offensive line development. Everyone is doing their job. We are experienced and healthy. We functioning at a better level. When you play quarterback, and everyone is doing their job, it becomes fun.
- Back in the 1990s, people were flying over filming practices. That has been going on for years. I was at a school, and they got all our practice videos.
- I like stopping in the last two minutes. It gives you better finishes. You are training for pro ball, why not be it with the rules? You have to protect the quarterback. We are fortunate to have four guys. It’s a physical game, but you have to change with the times too.
