Apex Performance of the Week: Noah Thomas shines in A&M's opener
In this week's Apex Performance of the Week, we highlight Texas A&M sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas. After insiders raved about him throughout the offseason, Thomas showed out with a trio of scoring grabs in the Aggies' 52-10 win over New Mexico.
David Nuño’s Performance of the Week: Noah Thomas
- Noah Thomas, and if you bring him up, you have to bring up Evan Stewart. Thomas had six catches for 74 yards and three touchdowns. He could have had four touchdowns. He was fantastic in our Stacked interview yesterday.
- When you have a quite two-touchdown, 115-yard game, Stewart was fantastic. He is really good.
- I loved how Johntay Cook and the Texas kids were tweeting at Stewart this offseason with so much talk about blocking at A&M when his numbers are now rivaling Xavier Worthy’s.
- Two things can be true about Conner Weigman. I thought Max Johnson looked pretty good, but there is a difference with Weigman out there. He has the “it” that we’ve been talking about. We’re seeing it happen NOW.
Olin Buchanan’s Performance of the Week: Josh DeBerry
- I never want to go for the low-hanging fruit, so I’ll go with this debut: Josh DeBerry. He had an interception. A&M only had four of those last year. He had 10 tackles. There was a lot of angst during the offseason about th cornerback position, and we didn’t even think DeBerry would be a starter. He comes in from Boston College and played really well. He played a physical style.
- I’m not going for the low-hanging fruit. I’m going for DeBerry.
- I’m not on board with “Connie Football.” I’m more in on “Weiggy.” What’s better than having a nickname? Being known simply by your first name.
- I don’t want this to sound like criticism of Johnson because it’s actually admiration of him. Johnson is a quarterback you can win WITH, and you can win a lot of games with him. Weigman is the quarterback you win because of. I’m still shocked they did not start him vs. South Carolina last year.
- I’m not sure you could ask any more of Weigman than what you got. He was really good. And beyond the passing numbers, he took the ball and ran it a couple of times for first downs. He was fun to watch.
- I am prepared to say that the A&M offense will be as good as the offensive line. If the offensive line is good, the A&M offense could be really good. If the offensive line is really good, the offense is going to be great.
