Joni Taylor's Aggies push winning streak to an impressive eight straight
With a 95-45 drubbing of Mississippi Valley State, Texas A&M women's basketball has stretched its winning streak to eight games with SEC play just around the corner. On Tuesday, head coach Joni Taylor joined TexAgs Radio to discuss A&M's winning ways.
Key notes from Joni Taylor interview
- It’s hard to compare this team to last year because we’re such a different team with a different roster. From a consistency standpoint with this team, we’re getting better defensively, which is the core of who we are. We are among the top teams nationally in a lot of defensive categories. Offensively, we’re getting comfortable with different rotations. We’re sharing the basketball. We’re ramping up our consistency in rebounding the basketball. We’re starting to dominate on the boards.
- We were playing slow in the first half last night. I thought Mississippi Valley State did a good job of mixing up their defensive looks. We talked about not letting their defense impact what we wanted to run offensively. It slowed us down, so we had a reminder at halftime of how we wanted to attack. They listened and made those corrections.
- We have a pressing team, a zone team, a fast-paced team and a team that can play in the half-court. We have so many weapons. That makes you versatile and hard to scout.
- It’s important to finish strong. We want to continue to get better as we approach SEC play. We talk about putting four quarters together. The thing we did last night was sub out and put different players in different positions. For example, we had Sahara Jones at the four, but she doesn’t play that position. There wasn’t a drop-off in execution or intensity. I was happy to see the team continue to be intense despite the lop-sided score.
- What is really impressive about Lauren Ware’s blocked shots is most of them stay in bounds, which gives us an offensive advantage. Blocking shots is great, but when you can save the ball, it’s a special skill set.
- This is a quick turnaround with a 1 p.m. tip tomorrow against Prairie View A&M. Right after I hang up, we will watch film and start practice. It’s fan appreciation and free admission. Come see us. We’re fun to watch. I’ll be looking for attention to detail from our team in this game. We want to finish the non-conference strong.
- Having people in the stands changes everything. We talk about creating our own energy, but it's even better when the 12th Man does that for us. It’s awesome when Aggieland is behind us, and it sends such a special message to our team.
