Track & Field Report: Pat Henry recaps Razorback Invitational
Following a record-setting meet for several Aggies at the Razorback Invitational, A&M will be back in College Station for the Charlie Thomas Invitational. Head coach Pat Henry joined Wednesday's edition of TexAgs Radio to look back on last week's meet.
Key Notes from Pat Henry interview
- We had a really good meet at the Razorback Invitational. We had two new school records set with Heather Abadie in the pole vaulting and Cooper Cawthra in the mile. He ran a 3:59, and he had a great race. Heather jumped 13’4 but we had a lot of really good efforts.
- Auhmad Robinson ran 46.1 which is one of the top times in the country in the 400 meters.
- We had two half-milers perform well this weekend too. Kimar Farquharson ran his first race at 1:47 plus.
- Bailey Goggans has had a tough year and a half, but came back and ran 2:03 at 800 meters.
- Jermaisha Arnold ran 52 seconds in the quarter-mile.
- I think one of the great runs of the weekend, that isn’t being talked about as much, is Connor Schulman and Ja’Qualon Scott, who both ran 7.68 in the 60-meter hurdles, but Connor was able to beat Ja’Qualon by a thousandth of a second. That’s number 3 and 4 times ever run at Texas A&M and to run that fast this early, they both look real good right now.
- Joniar Thomas, in the multi-event put up one of the better scores we’ve ever had here at Texas A&M.
- We had a really good weekend, and like you said some things are starting to come together.
- Cawthra did really well, but he had a freshman Ondrej Gajdos right behind him at 4:02. Those young guys are after those times, and they don't look at it any different from a guy who has been here for two to three years. Ondrej is after that time, and the next time they line up they’ll be trying to beat each other.
- We have two new guys who started with us this week. Victor Kibiego ran an 8:05, and the other one ran 8:26 or 8:27 in the 3k. One’s a transfer from UTEP, who was third last year in the Steeplechase at the NCAA Championships, so he can run.
- It’s about the level of competition, when you get to a competition like this. As many good athletes line up at the same spot, just like here this weekend coming in, it's gonna be a great lineup of people that are here. Good things happen in a competitive environment, when it's not competitive good things don't happen.
- The better the competition, the better everybody does, and it’s about beating each other.
- For our 400-meter group right now, I'm looking at a bunch of different people, except on the female side. We have Jaydan Wood coming back, so we’ll be more secure there. But our men’s team has eight guys that are running really close together. It’s a competitive and young group of guys, but it’s a returning group.
- This group ran three-flat at the National Championships, and anytime you’re running like that, that's getting after it. We’re gonna run well, I think it's just getting the act together and figuring it all out, and that’s my fault right now because I haven’t put the right four guys on the track at one time.
- Sam Whitmarsh is one of the better half-mile runners we’ve ever had at Texas A&M. Sam’s dealt with some injuries, and has had a lot of things gone wrong for him, including heart surgery, but he’s healthy now. I'm looking forward to the race this weekend. He's a great competitor, we’ll see who’s ready to run with him, but right now it’s about Sam getting a good race in. Sam is such a competitor that when he gets in a better race. He’ll be ready then.
- Come out to the meet this weekend folks. You’ll really enjoy it. The Charlie Thomas Invitational takes place Feb. 2-3 at the Fasken Indoor Track & Field.
