For the first time in 2024, magic happened.

Olsen Magic, that is.

With the game knotted in the tenth inning, Hayden Schott delivered a walk-off single to right field on the first pitch he saw as No. 7 Texas A&M swept Rhode Island with a 12-11 victory on Sunday.

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” Schott said. “I kinda just blanked, I was like, ‘Stick to my approach, see a fastball.’

“I figured that they were gonna try to get one over 0-0, so I was like, ‘Don’t miss it if they do’. I knew that all we needed was a base hit and I wasn't trying to do too much and it worked out.

Schott’s walk-off was the first of his career. He said it’s something he will never forget.

“It was pretty unbelievable,” Schott said. “I’ll never forget it, ever.”

Though Olsen Magic was required for the Maroon & White to come out on top, early on it appeared they would cruise to their 16th straight victory after leading 7-0 by the fifth inning.

However, Rhode Island had other plans.

Highlighted by an eight-run seventh, the Rams scored 11 unanswered runs to take a surprising 11-7 lead.

“I don’t know what I was thinking. I kinda just blanked, I was like, ‘Stick to my approach, see a fastball.’ I figured that they were gonna try to get one over 0-0, so I was like, ‘Don’t miss it if they do’. I knew that all we needed was a base hit and I wasn't trying to do too much and it worked out.”

A&M quickly fell behind for its largest deficit of the season and stared its first loss in the face.

“I’m proud of our team for not cashing in that game because it would have been very easy to cash in,” A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies began their climb back as Jace LaViolette walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run. In the eighth, Ted Burton launched a solo home run to left field.

Burton finished the day 3-for-5 with a walk and three RBIs.

The top of the order led off the ninth for the Aggies, who needed at least two runs to stay alive.

After Gavin Grahovac struck out, LaViolette walked and Braden Montgomery doubled down the right-field line.

Schott grounded out to the pitcher in his next at-bat, which scored LaViolette and brought the Aggies within one run.

Despite having an opportunity to do more damage in the ninth, Schott didn’t let his groundout affect him when it came time to play hero in the tenth.

“I got jammed,” Schott said. “With my approach that is hitting the ball the other way, sometimes that happens, so I didn't really think too much of that. I have a pretty short memory of baseball.

“I love the show Ted Lasso, so he says ‘Be a goldfish.’ They have the shortest memory in the Animal Kingdom so I tried to be a goldfish and forget what happened last at-bat.”

Along with his first Olsen Magic moment, Hayden Schott finished 4-for-7 with two RBIs.

Back-to-back walks to Burton and Jackson Appel followed Schott as Caden Sorrell — the tying run — came in to score on a bases-loaded walk.

“I thought [Caden] Sorrell’s at-bat was awesome,” Schlossnagle said. “To be put in that scenario in front of a big crowd. Our crowd was awesome, by the way. I need to compliment them. The 12th Man certainly played a role in that.

“We were able to keep pushing the bat down the line, so our guys did a great job playing pitch-to-pitch.”

Evan Aschenbeck struck out the side in the top of the tenth inning, keeping the game tied and setting up Schott for his heroics.

“You can always count on him,” Justin Lamkin said of Aschenbeck. “That’s the right guy for the right time, especially in any game and any situation. I knew he’d do what he did. I’m super proud of him.”

Although the circumstances of the late innings may overshadow the start of the game, Lamkin's outing on the mound is more than noteworthy.

“I felt really confident with all three of my pitches. They were all working for me,” Lamkin said. “I just went out there knowing if I win the 0-0, the important counts and dominate the zone, I would be good.”

The sophomore out of Corpus Christi racked up a career-high in strikeouts with 11 across 5.2 innings of work, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk. Lamkin attributed much of his success to his slider low in the zone.

Kelii Horvath, TexAgs
Now 16-0, Texas A&M remains the only undefeated team in the entire Southeastern Conference.

Lamkin surrendered his lone run in his last at-bat when URI shortstop Evan Moroney hit a solo home run — marking the Rams' first run of the series.

Other than giving up the long ball to Moroney, Lamkin had Rhode Island’s hitters number all afternoon.

“The way they swung the bat the rest of the game shows you what a good job [Lamkin] did,” Schlossnagle said.

The Aggies would have liked to keep their early lead, but with Southeastern Conference play beginning next week, a game in which they had to battle back may be considered a positive in the long run.

“It’s a good thing for our team to have to go through something like that because it's certainly going to happen again during the course of the season when you have to battle back or play an extra-inning game,” Schlossnagle said.

A&M’s starting pitcher felt the same way as his skipper.

“We’re gonna face challenges and ups and downs so it’s good to have these moments and get over them,” Lamkin said.

One final tune-up remains before the Aggies enter conference play as they host Sam Houston State on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

What the hell are you talking about?

URI came into this series with an RPI better than 100+ DI teams, and getting swept will probably help them in the rankings.

This is baseball. Bad teams beat good teams all the time. The Oakland Zombie Athletics will win 50 games this year.

Losses like this are never fun, but are a part of the game, and the team would probably learn a lot from this loss except for the part where we won.

Tell me you don't know anything about baseball without telling me you don't know anything about baseball.

Losses are simply going to happen in baseball. We're going to lose games this year. If you're not ready to lose in baseball, your best course might be to GTFO.

The "worst team in the country" is now 99 (out of 305) teams in the Division I baseball RPI.

Warning, this is gonna be a long post. Just some thoughts and a roster breakdown kinda. Preface all this to say that this team is obviously really good and definitely has the talent to get to Omaha. They're not 100% clicking on all cylinders yet but considering they still haven't lost, it tells you how scary they could be if they totally hit their stride.

Obviously the pitching is much improved, but offensively they haven't gotten totally rolling yet. There are times where maybe the production hasn't been quite up to their raw talent level.... Think game 2's against McNeese/Wagner/Rhode Island and also the TSU game. I'm not sure if maybe because our pitching has been so solid against overmatched opposing offenses, maybe our guys aren't always in like "no mercy" mode... Are they always, not to sound extreme here, but have they 100% been out for blood in terms of really going out there & dominating at all times? We have as much or more offensive talent than anyone, but teams like Tennessee, Alabama, UC Irvine, Georgia etc. are demolishing teams seemingly every game whereas for example we have left some runs on the board at times... Also there have been some baserunning miscues that can really hurt the momentum. A 7-0 lead against Rhode Island seems OK, but hitting up to our ability it'd probably be closer to 17-0. A 7-0 lead in a game like that may equal just 1 or 2 runs against a good SEC pitching staff. We have the talent, and if the intensity is there every pitch, this lineup can wear out any pitching staff in the country.

Grahovac is physical and has loud tools, and he'll just keep getting better. I love his patience also. Laviolette, not much needs to be said, simply an incredible talent and he can swing it even better than he has lately. Montgomery is that combo of tremendous skill and also consistency... He's a top 5 overall pick right now I think. And it's crazy because I bet he could still take it to another gear. Schott has plus hitting ability and I think there's more power in there... He has been slightly inconsistent at times, maybe needs to be a little more patient but he's coming around lately. Burton is an experienced bat with power, he's pretty steady. Really like Appel's game. Again, a consistent performer with a great eye and some pop... He can hit. Also solid defense from him and Kaufer so far. I know Camarillo went through a slump but he definitely came out of it yesterday. He's got a nice swing, opposite field approach and very smooth in the field. Sorrell has all sorts of upside, oppo pop, very good athlete... Future is bright. Johnston has strength and juice in the bat and I'm sure will impress as time goes on & he gets more opportunities. Looking forward to Targac getting healthy, they need him, he was swinging pretty well before he got banged up and he's a dangerous bat. Chestnut is an electric runner & makes things happen. You also can't sleep on the bat, he can swing it. Has strength and I really like how he plays overall. Bard unfortunately has struggled this year on both sides of the ball... He has some pop but hasn't gotten to it enough... I think he sort of cuts himself off with his swing/finish of his swing and it inhibits him. A higher finish on his swing would help in my opinion... Kent is a grinder, has versatility, maybe the bat hasn't quite progressed as much as hoped but still time for that. I really like Jack Bell. Love his setup, approach, and swing... Very good eye also. He's gonna have a great career. Binderup has power but hasn't gotten to it quite enough in games yet.

Pitching, wow the strike throwing is clearly night and day from the last couple of years. Prager has taken his game to another level... He is a strike throwing machine. It's elite level strike throwing. He has life on his fastball and good secondary... I do wonder if he will need to try for more chases on 0-2, 1-2 counts against SEC offenses. Going right after offenses like Wagner and Rhode Island up 0-2, he can get those guys out in the zone with 2 strikes but can he always do that against SEC hitters? Might need to try for more chases against those guys with 2 strikes. Tanner Jones has Friday starter stuff. Arm strength, good loose delivery, and a great slider. Looking forward to seeing him progress... Lamkin has really good stuff also, fastball has zip, deception in delivery and above average slider and changeup. Cortes still a mixed bag... His stuff is clearly better, getting more swings and misses... The perceived velo on his fastball is higher now and his slider is hugely improved. The strike throwing is still a question mark. Aschenbeck is Aschenbeck... As consistent as ever. He is money. Sdao is bigger and stronger this year with a nasty slider... Fastball velo is up and man how about that performance against Texas? Just dominant. Yesterday, just shake it off, nobody is perfect. Josh Stewart looks really confident. Great slider and fastball has life. The rest of the bullpen is still getting sorted out. I was really intrigued by Eldridge Armstrong's performance on Friday. Aggressive and athletic delivery and the fastball jumped out of his hand... Threw some good sliders also. After seeing that, I'm a little confused why he's behind in the pecking order to Moss, Peery, and Smith. I also wonder if Montgomery should get more chances on the mound. Moss has arm strength and a lot of moxie but is a bit raw/needs to bulk up which is expected & understandable as a true freshman. Peery has struggled with command so far. I like that he's a different look with the low arm slot, good movement on FB/slider but hasn't been extremely sharp with his command. I love Smith's intensity and he has good stuff... Again just command hasn't been 100% on yet. Badmaev and Jackson are solid... Love Rudis's new lower arm slot. He looks really comfortable and confident with it. Throwing strikes with good movement and location. Isaac Morton has a power arm, damn. Can see why there was draft interest... Arm strength and slider can be filthy. A ton of upside. Really intrigued by Kaiden Wilson also, lefty arm with a ton of juice and excited to see him develop. Hoping to see Wansing at some point, yes control has been shaky at times in the past but he has great stuff and a fantastic slider. Overall the pitching has been great and these kids and Max Weiner deserve a ton of credit.

This team has so much potential and like I said they are definitely Omaha caliber if it all comes together. Did they cruise at times in non-con, maybe on offense? Possibly... for example after they got down 11-7 yesterday Kent had probably his best at bat of the season, crushed a foul homer, fouled off some tough pitches and worked a walk. Should it have taken being down 11-7 for that at bat to happen? I was honestly wondering if it might be better for them to lose a game to maybe light a fire under the offense, but maybe getting down 11-7 and fighting back was enough. I just know all these hitters have so much talent and potential, and even though they maybe have left a little on the table at times this year I really believe sky's the limit for what they can do in conference play. Great test coming up tomorrow against Sam Houston, good tuneup for SEC play... Can't wait for the rest of the season and this team could do some special things. Let's go!!!
