ESPN analyst Herm Edwards joins TexAgs Radio to talk some ball
After his time as Arizona State's head coach, Herm Edwards is back at ESPN as an NFL and college football analyst. On Thursday, Edwards joined TexAgs Radio to provide his thoughts on the biggest NFL storylines ahead of tonight's Hall of Fame Game in Canton.
Key notes from Herm Edwards interview
- Yeah, tackle football begins tonight. It doesn’t count, but it does count for a couple of young players trying to make their names in the NFL. It is a historical game for a lot of guys and one that kids grow up watching. Obviously, when you go to Canton, you see all the busts of Hall of Fame coaches and players.
- Right now, the Texans are going to be battling with Jacksonville, but last year, they proved that they are the best team in that division. There are a bunch of young quarterbacks in the division, so it makes it interesting. In the next 10 years, if these guys play at their potential, they are going to be the guys.
- When you look at C.J. Stroud’s numbers, they are outstanding. The key to me was him only throwing five interceptions last year. That is really good for a rookie quarterback.
- I think Caleb Williams is going to be a really good player. He has a lot of traits similar to Patrick Mahomes in the pocket. His movement skills and ability to throw off platform are great. He’s just got to stop throwing the ball to the bad guys.
- They surrounded him with some good players as well, like veteran receiver Keenan Allen. D.J. Moore is outstanding, and then you have guys like D’Andre Swift, Rome Oduze and Cole Kmet.
- Andre Johnson was a big, physical receiver who was very competitive. When you play big guys like that, they are hard to tackle. That was the scary part. If you’re not a corner that's not willing to tackle, all of a sudden, he was on the run.
- Devin Hester really changed the way we look at special teams. A lot of his plays came from his ability to run. He was another guy who was very strong and a very strong runner as well. It seemed like every time they needed something big, he came up for them.
- I think Dak Prescott is comfortable in Dallas. I think he is interesting in a sense that, because he plays for the Dallas Cowboys, it comes with a sense of entitlement. Every quarterback there looks up to Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. He’s kind of following the path of Tony Romo.
- These guys have been 29 years away from carrying any kind of trophy. As much as we like him, the quarterback and coach always get the blame. They have all-stars on both sides of the ball, and they were outstanding last year. Then, they let the Packers come into their house and beat them.
- There were altercations every other day when I was coaching. Training Camp was different. I was in the league when there were only 14 regular season games. It was a different mentality. Obviously, after about a week of football, you get tired of beating up on each other. Now, you have everything on tape, so now everything becomes a talking point on radio shows or ESPN.
- I think Russell Wilson is in a good place with this offense, which is similar to the one they ran in Seattle. He’s a good play-action quarterback, and he’ll be playing with a good defense, too.
- Justin Fields doesn’t have many reps playing quarterback. I think he is going to be used more as a flash guy. Russell Wilson is playing for a lot of reasons. He is playing for a great coach and is trying to reestablish himself as a Hall of Fame quarterback.
- Aaron Rodgers is 40 years old. He is also 13 years removed from the playoffs, and it has been 14 years since he last won the Super Bowl. If he can stay healthy, the Jets have a real good shot of winning the playoffs. The AFC East is another interesting division.
- I’m really big on Josh Allen, and I think the best thing that happened to him was Stefon Diggs leaving. I think now it is his offense.
- Say what you want about Tua Tagovailoa, but the Dolphins are a playoff-contention team as well. That is a very fun division.
- Xavier Worthy is paired with a guy like Patrick Mahomes, who is going to get him the ball in a position where he’ll have room to run. He’s a guy who can run and catch, and they’ve had guys like this before. I think he is another weapon that Andy Reid will use to get him the ball.
