Catching up with legendary Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller

It's a big-time matchup under the lights in Aggieland, and Texas A&M legend Von Miller made his watch back to College Station to see his Fightin' Texas Aggies take on Notre Dame. On Saturday morning, the Super Bowl MVP stopped by TexAgs to catch up for a few minutes.

Key notes from Von Miller interview

  • I spent four years in College Station, and it was life-changing. Texas A&M is definitely embedded in my DNA.

  • I love coach Mike Elko. He did a great job with the defense years ago before he left for Duke. I think any great defense is led by the defensive line. Shemar Turner is going to be great for us. Nic Scourton is going to be great for us.

  • We have an offense, too. Conner Weigman is going to be great for us, too. Keeping up with the Aggies is even easier now with the new EA Sports College Football 25 game, but I’ve always kept up with the Aggies. I expect big things out of these guys.

  • Scourton looks pro-ready to me. He came to The Star and trained with me and Myles Garrett. He looks like a big guy, but he moves like a finesse defensive end. He has the total package of speed and power. It’s going to be a big year for him.

  • When you think about A&M, you think about defense and running the ball. That’s what we’ve done throughout all of the years, even before I was here, back in the old Southwest Conference days. It’s about hard-nosed football, running the ball and playing great defense.

  • With all these superstar quarterbacks — and I’ve been around a lot of them — they have this aura. That’s what the young guys are saying, and Weigman has that aura. He’s able to run and pass the ball, and you have to have that in today’s game. You can’t sit in the pocket and throw all day. You have to be able to scramble and move. Weigman is the total package for sure.

  • When I came to A&M, we weren’t winning anything back then. It wasn’t what it is today. We fought through that, and that builds character. In my second year here, we only won a few games, and Mike Sherman turned the program around and taught us a lot about integrity, trust, honor and brotherhood above everything. I’m still close with most of my teammates from back in those days. That’s what’s embedded in us today. It’s about brotherhood, and when you’re brothers with these guys, you can go out and play for real.

  • Billy Liucci is my guy. He bleeds A&M football, and he doesn’t age either. Nothing ages here. It’s like a time-warp. Everything is still the same. The energy is still the same, and that’s why I love it here. It’s not a small town anymore. There is always a new building or a new high-rise going up or a new restaurant. They have new buildings on campus, too, but the aesthetic of the buildings still looks the same as it did when I was here. It’s bigger with a lot more Ags here, but the energy is still the same.

  • Notre Dame hangs their hat on running the football traditionally, and I think they’ll try to do that today. We hang our hat on running the football and playing defense. I think a lot of points will be scored, and that’s OK as long as we come out with the win.
