After an explosive Saturday for Texas A&M's offense at "The Swamp," the Aggies now sit at 2-1 with Bowling Green up next. Legendary former A&M head coach Jackie Sherrill joined Monday's edition of TexAgs Live to speak on the Maroon & White's showing over the weekend.

Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview

  • That is the first win on the road since October 16, 2021. You have to give the coaches credit. They had the team ready to go with a backup quarterback. Marcel Reed had 261 total yards and three total touchdowns.

  • I am impressed by the development of the offensive line. They drove 99 yards with zero passes, which is a big deal for developing the offensive line.

  • The quarterback decision is one you have to make. The quarterback is only one position. Which quarterback fits the offense you're trying to run? How do the players respond to each one? We can go all the way back to when we put Bucky Richardson in, and he went 86 yards for a touchdown to win a game. You've got a big decision as a coach. It doesn't take anything away from the starting quarterback.

  • Regardless of how great a team's skilled players are, it's very hard to win the game if you can't win the game up front. I can remember a game in which there were five passes, four incompletions and one interception. That team still won the game handily because of their offensive line. You have to tip your hat when you go 99 yards with no passes because that is hard to do.

  • As a coach, you challenge your players. It is hard to go into “The Swamp” and be able to do the things that Texas A&M did. Texas A&M possessed the ball for 15 minutes more than Florida. It is great to have a running back over 100 yards. That is a big deal. It is a compliment to the offensive linemen. They are getting their hats on the right people and making holes for the backs.

  • Beating the teams you are supposed to beat is the mental part that you are teaching the players. It is the culture that you have. We can go back to the Georgia-Kentucky game this weekend. Georgia found a way to win.

  • Every week is a challenge. Anybody can beat anybody at any time. The mental preparation has to be the same as last week. It is the next game. It doesn't matter today what we did in Florida. What matters now is preparing for this coming Saturday.

  • To me, Marcel Reed's comfort was the most impressive thing about him. He was comfortable. You did not see him panic or get rattled. That means the coaches did a great job preparing him and calling plays he could execute. That's not to take anything away from his ability. The young man has the ability.

  • I've always said a young quarterback doesn't know anybody better. If he's in a game where he has to win the game, how will he respond? There are still questions, but we're all excited. Sometimes, we think a player is better than sliced bread with tons of butter, but sometimes, a player goes backward. It's important to take what they did last week and move forward.
