Texas A&M adds former Auburn TE Micah Riley via transfer portal

The Aggies have bolstered their tight end room for 2025 today with the transfer portal addition of former Auburn tight end Micah Riley.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and has spent his last three seasons at Auburn. His offer list coming out of Bellevue West in the class of 2022 included the likes of Michigan, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, and many others.

On The Plains, Riley turned into a weekly contributor after his freshman season which only saw him feature in four contests. In the following two campaigns, he played in all 25 games for the Tigers and was primarily used as an edge-setting, end-of-the-line blocker and only logged three catches for 43 yards and one touchdown.

Riely’s addition to the Texas A&M roster is highly likely to be in a similar role along the line of scrimmage or perhaps as an H-Back — a role that was featured often during the 2024 season.

Stay tuned. We'll have more on the Aggies' latest portal move for our TexAgs Premium subscribers.

No clue how good this guy is. Hope he can fill a need.

But Kleins offense is at its best when he can use two tight ends. A receiving threat and a blocker

Not necessarily as our base. We won't use 2 TEs every play. But we will run 2 TE sets throughout the game. We aren't recruiting this guy as our receiving tight end. We are recruiting him because we believe he's an upgrade in blocking.

I mean I wish we could find a great blocker that also had 700 yards receiving. Just not sure that's out there and realistic. Let's hope we are right with regards to blocking better. That's his job

Another blocker for 4th and 1 up the middle.

Believe it or not, good teams tend to do this. They just do it better

Really hard to get too excited about this. I guess it's OK, but we need to do a lot more to get over the hump of eight and four.

I want somebody to love me the way Klein loves having TEs on his roster (that he doesn't seem to want to use).

Kleins offense in 2023 had the 2nd leading receiving tight end in the big 12. He has used tight ends.

We have one year of data here at A&M. It's highly premature to think he won't use tight ends. It's quite clear none last year were able to do the job we wanted.

And again, this guy is being recruited as a blocker anyways. Kleins offense uses blocking tight ends, too. Go watch his film at Kansas state. One great receiving threat and one good blocker. Last year ours all struggled to block.

No idea if this guy will be an upgrade. But we have to try options and needed 2. We are still likely to take another in the portal, fyi. We don't have a lot of tight ends on the roster. This guy makes 5. Most teams carry 5-6.

My son graduated Auburn 18 months ago.

I asked him if this kid is any good and he said he'd never heard of him. He watches every game they play.

Meanwhile Donovan Green played how many meaningful offensive snaps this year?

& we're recruiting 4th string tight end transfers?

Yikes

We certainly could have used an edge blocking TE against Texas on that last 4th and 1…

We're adding another TE that we don't effectively utilize with the ones we've got?

We could have used ANYONE blocking the DE who made the tackle.

Welcome to Aggieland, Micah Riley! I think he will be a good blocking tight end for our offense, especially for short-yardage situations.

Hey I've been as vocal as anyone about Klein needing to go. But it sounds like this kid is a traditional blocking TE. So hopefully he can help.

the thing about this type is it lets the defense know it's likely a run-play.

"But Kleins offense is at its best"? Did I miss something this season?

Yes, Klein's offense having the personnel to realistically be at it's best. Hth.

I know that this board hates him, but his offensive at KState absolutely overachieved to their talent levels, and TE was a big part of the reason why. I also thought he had overachieved through 11 games here relative to the hand he was dealt. The shut out against texas obviously puts a major damper on his resume.

…And an interior OLine who didn't get blown up at the point of attack and blown off the LOS. Unblocked DE made the play before any of their other DL would've.

His inability to convert a 4th and short puts a major damper on his resume. If we were just 40% we go to the playoffs.
