Texas A&M Football
Notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
* Right now, A&M is playing very hard and very smart. Terry Price has made the defensive line the most improved unit on the field right now, and the defense as a whole is playing well. Mark Snyder has put more defensive speed on the field which is crucial to having a decent defense in the SEC. Snyder does a lot with the schemes which shows that he has been around the game for a while. Kliff Kingsbury called some great plays at the right times which allowed A&M to have a decent cushion at halftime.
* Johnny Manziel has been outstanding so far this season. When you have someone with his level of talent, it gets to be where he is just out there playing on raw instinct. What he likes is that the coaches are matching his talent and giving Manziel a chance to get better every week. Quarterbacks who get sacked on a regular basis don’t have that sixth sense to feel the backside pressure, however Manziel does possess that talent and it really helps bring his game to another level.
* Manziel will continue to improve as he sees more defenses and learns to anticipate the game better. He compares Manziel to a combination of a young Doug Flutie and Bucky Richardson.
* The thing you are always concerned about on road trips is distractions. You can tell them how to put blinders on and how to take yourself away from distractions, but going to Oxford won’t be easy because the team has to stay in Memphis and drive into town for the game. Playing in Ole Miss’ stadium is not an easy place to play, and he compares the atmosphere to a sophisticated version of Tiger Stadium at LSU.
* The most important thing for any team is to take the game as it comes. As fans, it’s easy to jump ahead and look down the road at a particular game on the schedule, but the team can’t afford to look ahead. A win this weekend would give A&M two in the SEC, and a year ago, no one thought A&M could win a game in the SEC, let alone two. He thinks LSU has a problem going to Florida this weekend and thinks the Gators will win on Saturday.
