Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White
TexAgs' recruiting analyst Jason Howell joined TexAgs Live on Friday morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting and transfer portal trail surrounding Texas A&M.
Key notes from Recruiting Country
- Tyler Onyedim is a four-year contributor. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 player in his most productive season. He has 90 career tackles in four years. He is a guy that is worked up and down the line. He brings a lot of size. Everyone wondered where A&M would get help outside of the edge rushers. He is a guy from Texas, and A&M is bringing him back.
- The portal action happens quickly, but when Onyedim jumped in, A&M was immediately connected with him. The Aggies were able to secure him over Texas and Notre Dame.
- Going off with what you saw yesterday with Landon Rink, it was arguably the most consistent and productive performance of anyone at the Under Armour All-American Game. He led Team Icon with the most tackles and tackles for loss. In a good group of defensive linemen, you heard Rink’s name over and over again. He was constantly providing pressure.
- Chace Sims is coming off a great season, winning a state title. Those guys have the skillset. They play with great pad level and energy. I think DJ Sanders had the most upside of any of them. This defensive line group, with Marco Jones in there, is really strong.
- I like what they brought in the freshman class. You don't want to count on them, but they do have the potential to make headway on the depth charts.
- David Gusta is looking at Tennessee and Kentucky. He is one of the most high-coveted defensive linemen in the portal right now.
- You have to trust your processes of development. Thankfully, you have brought in a couple of guys over the last couple of years who can develop. We saw Solomon Williams and a couple of guys in the bowl game have flashes.
- This is what is fun and scary about college football. You are counting on unknowns. You bring in highly-talented recruits, and you don't hear their names as much. You have to develop those guys. They do have really intriguing pieces on campus. How many spots do they have left?
- You are looking at two to three spots left at most. You may not have Noah Thomas coming back, and that gives up room.
- A&M has been looking at Christian Harrison, and he was on campus. I don't see a ton more additions.
- Last year, A&M was just ramping up. Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of Nic Scourton's commitment. That was the huge weekend when 13 commitments happened in a matter of four days.
- I don't see a whole lot more movement. If you want another edge guy, does it come at the expense of another guy on the roster?
