The oft-quoted line from Alexander Pope's poem “An Essay on Man” in 1732 is used in various seasons of life and circumstance, but it becomes particularly popular around the start of baseball season, especially one on the heels of a bitterly disappointing campaign a year ago that saw a preseason No. 1 team fail to make the postseason.
