Another tight matchup fell away from the Aggies as the No. 15 Texas A&M softball team lost to the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in Game 2 of the Lone Star Showdown, 3-2.
The Aggies are now 2-8 this season in games decided by two runs or less, and fall to 5-3 in SEC play. With Saturday’s win, the Longhorns take the series and extend their season’s win streak to a school-record 29 games.
After a high-stakes offensive brigade on Friday night, the rivals swung the pendulum to the field for a defensive competition.
Junior pitcher Teagan Kavan was called on in the sixth after pitching 4.2 collective innings on Friday night and winning Game 1.
In the top of the seventh, the Aggies were down to their final out as Kavan faced power hitter Mya Perez, who was 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored.
Perez struck out swinging, sealing the game at 3-2 in favor of the Longhorns and marking Kavan’s second save of the season.
Freshman two-way player Hannah Wells started in the circle for Texas on Saturday. Last night, she reached on a fielder’s choice to send the walk-off run across the plate in the Longhorns’ 9-8 victory.
Wells allowed seven hits and four walks, but struck out four Aggie batters, allowed just two runs and was tagged with the win.
Texas catcher Reese Atwood added to the defensive showing and assisted in three Aggie outs, getting two runners at second and one at third.
Leadoff hitter Kennedy Powell attempted to steal second base after being hit by a pitch in the third inning. Atwood slung a ball to shortstop Viviana Martinez, throwing Powell out on the attempt and breaking the nation’s longest active stolen base streak.
Powell was previously 42-for-42 on successful attempts, dating back to February 2024 against Louisiana Monroe.
Sophomore pitcher Sydney Lessentine threw all six innings for the Aggies, striking out six batters. Lessentine allowed five hits and three runs, one being the game-leading solo home run from Atwood, halting her momentum in the third inning after retiring eight Longhorns in a row.
Atwood went 2-for-3 on Saturday with two RBIs and a home run.
Senior first baseman Micaela Wark posted the best offensive stats for the Maroon & White, going 2-for-2, including an RBI single to tie the score at two in the third inning.
It was the Aggies’ first SEC series loss of the year, and it brings their overall record to 23-11.
Despite not coming out on top, the Aggies have out-hit the Longhorns 20-15 through two games and have only lost by a total of two runs.
The Maroon & White will look to bounce back on Sunday in Game 3 at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN.
