I have a couple of hockey related questions I would pose to Texags....

1) Has a goalie ever made a goal? I am assuming when it's empty net time, some goalie somewhere belted the puck and it happened to make it but does anyone know for sure?

2) What's the most lopsided power play ever? I've seen 5 on 2 before but has there ever been 5 on 1? 5 on 0? Can that even happen?

3) Any good general hockey stories? (Not a question, just wondered if anyone's seen anything crazy in person at a game)

I really don't know the answers to 1 and 2 so any help is appreciated.

answer to question 1 from wikipedia article:

quote:
Goalies credited with goals
A goalie scoring a goal in an NHL game is a very rare feat. Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur have both accomplished this twice, each doing so once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. Damian Rhodes and José Théodore are the only goalies in NHL history to score a goal in a shutout game.

On February 21, 1971, the Oklahoma City Blazers were trailing the Kansas City Blues 2-1 and decided to pull their goaltender. Michel Plasse scored on the open net and became the first professional goalie in the history of the game to score a goal.

Antero Niittymäki of the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms is the only known professional goalie to score in overtime, doing so when the Hershey Bears, needing a win in their last game to make the playoffs, pulled their goalie and an errant pass wound up in their net.

Darcy Wakaluk became the first goaltender in the AHL to score a goal during the 1987-88 season for the Rochester Americans [1].

On February 21, 1997, the Muskoka Bears' Ryan Venturelli became the first known goaltender in hockey history to score two goals (both empty net) in a hockey game. The goals came in an 11-6 win against the Durham Huskies during the Metro Junior A Hockey League 1996-97 regular season [2].

A chronological list of goals scored in the NHL by goalies:

Billy Smith, November 28, 1979 ¹
Ron Hextall, December 8, 1987
Ron Hextall, April 11, 1989 (shorthanded) ²
Chris Osgood, March 6, 1996
Martin Brodeur, April 17, 1997 ²
Damian Rhodes, January 2, 1999 ¹
Martin Brodeur, February 15, 2000 (game-winning)
José Théodore, January 2, 2001
Evgeni Nabokov, March 10, 2002 (power play)
Mika Noronen, February 14, 2004 ¹
Chris Mason, April 15, 2006 ¹
¹ Goals awarded due to the goalie being the last player on his team to touch the puck before the opposition scored on themselves.
² Scored in the playoffs

answer to question 2 from wikipedia, which disputes your assertion of having seen a 5-on-2:
quote:
Stacked penalties

When two players on one team are in the penalty box at the same time, it becomes a 5 on 3 situation. When a third player of the same team gets a penalty before either of the other two have expired, it remains 5 on 3 and it becomes a stacked penalties situation. This means the third penalty will start when one of the others expire, whether the time expires or the opposing team scores on the powerplay. This is because there can be no fewer than three skaters for each team on the ice at one time.

Yeah I figured out I only saw 5 on 3...I'm a casual hockey fan hence the questions! Thanks though!

imo, ron hextall is epitome of a stick-handling goalie. i think he makes guys like turco look like amateurs when they come out of the crease. not a slight to turco, but i think hextall was that good (and he helped reall define what it is today.)

For number 3, I was at the Michigan - Minnesota game back in '96 when Mike Legg did the "Michigan Move" to tie up the game.

don't even have to watch that to know what you're talking about. pure greatness. that guy will be immortalized for that one play.

Well several things I can say for #3. One of which was last night when Brendan Morrow laid the boom on Michalek and knocked him out of the playoffs...

Another was years ago when Aaron Downey of your Dallas Stars dropped the gloves (got into a fight) with random scrub #437 and knocked him out in one punch. I think someone did that to Krys Barch this year too, but its more fun when our guys do it!

The absolute coolest thing I've ever seen in hockey tho was the Stars hoisting the cup after an intense 6 game series with an amazing 3 OT instant classic clincher against Buffalo in 1999.

Legg actually played for the San Antonio Iguanas for a year as well.

The craziest thing I've seen in person was the pregame hijinks before the St. Cloud - Michigan game in the 2002 NCAA tournament. The game was played at Yost (Michigan's home rink and the greatest place to watch a game in the country). Before the game, the student section started laying into one of SCSU's skating cheerleaders, waving dollar bills and insinuating all sorts of things. Then, as the Michigan team was exiting the ice, the SCSU mascot got into a fight with pretty much the whole Michigan team. It was chaos as there were no refs around to break it up. To the best of my knowledge, no videos exist.

#3. Back before they redesigned the plexi around the rinks, guys used to get checked through it on occasion. There's nothing cooler than seeing a player get blasted into the boards and then end up sitting in the second row with the business casual fans.

Also, I stayed up til nearly 4:00 in the morning (while still in HS) watching the thrid-longest NHL game. Flyers - Penguins in 2000. Luckily the Flyers won, otherwise I would have been one angry, tired student the next day in class.

The goalie brawl between the Redwings and Avalanche back the early 2000s was pretty amazing as well.

Ps. Go Flyers!

Since the answers to the first two have already been posted, I'll just chip in with the best moment(s) I've witnessed personally.

For what it's worth I can totally see Turco getting a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick (goal, assist, and a fight)" at some point in his career. Although it'd be tough to do since he'd be ejected once the fight is over.

Being in the buidling for Mike Modano's 500th goal last year against Philly was something I'll never forget. That was a fun night!

#3:

Was at the Stars/Ducks game March 13, 1998 (Friday the 13th). Joe Nieuwendyk scored four goals that game and remains my favorite Dallas Star of all time. But as you can see from the videos, that's not why this games was so memorable. It was insane.

craziest thing i ever saw in person was derian hatcher shatter jeremy roenick's jaw into about 100 pieces. happened right in front of our section!! jr came up spitting out teeth into his hand. the jumbotron showed him on the bench -- he grabbed his incisors and wiggled them and his whole freaking front part of the jaw moved!!! nasty....

1st rule of american hockey:

never call out JR.

in all seriousness, i love jr, and think he's done more for american hockey than (and i know stars fans are gonna love this) modano.

on a separate note, does sidney crosby have the worst playoff beard in the history of the sport, or is just me?

The craziest hockey-related thing I've ever seen is now the floating head at the 3:45 mark of the first link.

Roenick had it coming after the slash he put on Modano. Did Hatch overdo it? Maybe, but just being JR doesn't allow him to chop at the wrist of another star.

JR has shown class as he's aged. The moment in the handshake line with Mo was classy and so were his comments postgame. As for him doing more for US Hockey than Modano, I just don't see it.

i love jr. he is the ultimate example of the guy you hate when he is on the other team, but you would love to have him on yours. i don't agree that he has done more than modano, but i think he has done as much. they are totally different players and the constant comparisons are really not fair to either one.

in reality, tkachuk was the one that caused the broken jaw. jr did the hit on modano, but it was that weasel tkachuk that shot off his mouth saying if the stars wanted to do something about it, they should do it on the ice. hatcher did.

yes there have been many goals scored by goalies.

and...

5 on 3 is the most lopsided there can be. at 3+ penalties they just start queing the guys in the box.

Hatcher had it out for Roenick for some reason. The first major injury he caused to JR was when Hatcher kicked him in the side of the knee. I didn't believe it until I saw it on the replay on sportscenter. Hatcher was a thug, and not as great as everyone makes him out to be. I still don't know why Hatcher was out to get him, but he went after JR like it was his only purpose in the NHL.

My best memories of that thug were when he got it in his head to try and muscle Chelios around. There was nothing better than watching Chelios get battered up with cheap shots, then he had enough and beat the crap out of Hatcher. The thug was not happy with this and decided to try it again in Dallas on his home ice and Chelios whipped his as$ there as well. Nothing better than watching a tiny short guy beat the crap out of the thug, enforcer. I was severely pissed off when the Red Wings got Hatcher (I'm a Wings fan). Kind of like if Barry Bonds were picked up by the Astros (though Hatcher was not nearly the player Bonds was, even without the juice).

JR has never been on a team that I root for, always on teams that I'm indifferent about, but he is awesome, and I've always been a fan. Especially with him, Chelios, Belfour before he lost his head, and the other guy (Tony Amonte?) for the Hawks in the mid-90s. I remember hearing a story about Roenick when he went to college. He was obviously chased by the scouts since junior hockey days, and very sought after, and he decided to go to college and give it a try. His first day, he's sitting in class and they pass out a "50-page book", by his words. He asked the guy next to him, "what is this?". The guy said it was their assignments for the semester. JR stood up, shook his hand, said "have a nice time in college", and left. Went straight to a phone, called his agent, and said "What is Chicago offering? Take it." You gotta love that guy.

he went after jr that time because jr intentionally took modano out. i can't remember exactly what happened, but i think he hit mo's knee?? in any case, modano was out for several games and the jaw shattering ensued in the next match up between the two.
