tough to get any folks interestd in mma on this board.....

I've seen a few mma threads, and one martial arts thread, but it was pretty much people talking about TKD and that's about it (I'm a BJJ guy, so that's not my bag of tricks)

i think most probably just follow ufc. i try to catch pride when i can, but it's access on cable is pretty slim so it is hard to stay current...other than just the big names.

ifl has some decent showings but i hear they are not doing well financially...perhaps that was a while back and they're okay now.

shoxc has potential being on Showtime, but their roster is average at best...except for Carano

differnt note -- i was a bjj guy a couple of years ago as well...fun stuff and it is aggravating to hear fans boo 15 seconds after any fight goes to the mat.

i agree. Just not a lot of traffic on thisboard. theres a ufc thread on the entertainment board

mm...agree - a lot of those folks have no clue about how tough the ground game is to learn and implement...

I had a good laugh at BJJ not too long ago....i was mentioning a couple basic collar chokes to a new kid, and he replied that he was more a "ground and pound" type, and didnt' need to learn chokes, reversals, passes, etc......I asked him how long he had rolled, and he replied "for almost two weeks".....

ha. great opportunity to pull guard on him, let him leave a couple lazy elbows out there and then have your fun with submissions!

where do you train?

I train at Gracie Barra in Clear Lake. I'm very new to formal BJJ (about 3 months in) -- but did no-gi submission grappling for about 15 months before that.

Really enjoying learning the fundamentals of BJJ and un-learning the many bad habits that I picked up doing no-gi.

Do you train in Houston?

I haven’t trained in over 18 months but when I was active it was at Houston BJJ Academy on Jones Road in NW Houston. I quit long ago as my wife needed major spinal surgery…intended to pick it back up in the summer of 07 but then we found out our first child was on her way!!!

I only attended a few classes that were shorts/t-shirts submission style…most of my training was with the gi. It really is the best way to learn the proper form.

Yeah, agree about the gi - whole new world for me, very different from the slippery, fast paced world of sub-grappling, that's for sure. My neck is red every week from gi-chokes...not something sub grapplin prepared me for!!!

The instructor at the place i train is super -- a very nice guy, with great teaching skills, with lots of top-level competition experience.

I'm surprised there aren't more folks on this board with BJJ backgrounds (who post anyway)....seems like everyone is a TKD black belt while I remain a lowly white belt in BJJ....

I train BJJ among other things.

Coming from a wrestling background in HS I used to hate the gi, but once I atarted learning some of the cheap moves with the gi I warmed up to it.

I'm also a firm believer than it makes your "no gi" game better.

BTW...BJJ White Belt >>> TKD Black Belt

I train with Travis Tooke.

Boo Boo...I've heard Travis Tooke's place is really good. A guy I used to sub-grapple with goes to Travis Tooke's (for BJJ) and has great things to say about it. Do you roll primarily gi or no-gi now?

I train at Gracie Barra and am still a white-belt with some stripes, but am really enjoying learning from Draculino - he's a great instructor and a super nice guy.

My athletic background (competitive men's gymnastics for 12 years) doesn't include any martial arts or wrestling...but having tons of flexibility, lots of core strength and great balance actually translated over to BJJ pretty well.

Travis is an awesome instructor, competitor and person. I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

I heard great things about Draculino as well. We are really lucky to have some top notch coaches here in Houston.

I can see where gymnastics would make a great background. You develop some great physical attributes for BJJ without developing any of the preconceived ideas that you would get from wrestling or other martial arts.

I'm focusing exclusively on my gi game right now. It really forces you to slow down and focus on being technical instead of relying on athleticism.

I am going to be in the Woodlands area for most of August. Is there a good BJJ place to train there? I am not too picky but if there is a place with classes just for people that are pruple belts and above that would be more what I am looking for.

Any help is appreciated.
FlagFootballGuy

TooCold.....i don't know the woodlands (I live in Clear Lake), but will ask some of the BJJ/grapplers I know and respond later in the week....

Elite MMA is in the Woodlands. I can't vouch for it, but you might check them.

Thanks fellas, that is appreciated. I found a couple of them on-line, but it is always better to go somewhere that is referred by someone else in my opinion.
