If we were to start an NCAA bowling team...

I think we can start filling our national championship trophy displays. It's rather pathetic that we might have to resort to a sport like bowling to win NC's.

I think A&M can field a team that is far better than these ***** championship teams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Bowling_Championship

I'd be fine with it. But you're way off with your baiting statement. Texas A&M is in a better position than 95% of the schools out there to win a national championship in numerous sports.

Baseball, M&W Track, Softball, W Swimming, Soccer, M & W Basketball, M & W Golf, all have programs that are now capable of winning a national championship.

As stated, few schools can claim as many top-notch programs.

We had a bowling team back in the late 80's, although it was not a scholarship sport. I only know this because I was on the team. Was lots of fun, and got a free trip to Vegas out of it.

It would be cool to have it be a scholarship sport. BB already mentioned that the next scholarship sport at A&M could likely be women's bowling.

AnalogyAg - I agree. But unfortunately we haven't actually done it in any sport other than archery in 20 years.

yeah- but the (i hope obvious) point is that the Texas A&M athletic program today has absolutely no resemblance to any previous athletic program in our 100+ year history.

sure we havent done it in 20 years, but we are only into year 5 of BB's program. Given that a build-up like we've seen in 4 years is a minor miracle, and that our major and minor sports are still improving, we are about in year 1 or 2 of having an athletic program capable of producing NCs in a number of sports.

Any talk of what A&M has or has not done in the last 20, 30, 40, or 90 years is not only completely irrelevant to what we are capable of now, it is ignorant, in my opinion.

If I may, an ANALOGY: the relevance of saying we havent won a NC in 20 years is like saying about your budding 15 year old track star, "well, he's never broken a 5 minute mile in 15 years, so not sure anything is going to change..."

the past 14 years are pretty irrelevant to where this program is at this point. Now, if we dont win anything in the next 5 years, I'll be concerned.

AgInTheColony,

We had a bowling team (non-scholarship) as recently as 2004. It existed under the Rec Sports - Sports Club umbrella.

I was on the team for my last 3 years there, and we had a pretty decent team. We won a couple of tournaments, including the conference championship, and advanced to the USBC Collegiate Regionals my senior year.

There were 2 solid freshmen on the team my senior year, so I would assume that it continued past when I left.

We attempted to form a girls team, but just didn't have the interest to form a full team. We did have a mixed team for one of the years I was there.

Smith,

Good to hear that it continued on. We had a women's team at that time. However, the tryouts for that team was pretty much 'if you show up, you're on the team'.

We should try to get a TexAgs team together. There's a new house opening here in The Colony this month.

If a women's bowling team offered scholarships, it would help with the Title IX quota system. Just like soccer and volleyball, though -- no men's bowling team.

AgInTheColony,

A couple of the guys that I bowled with, including one of the aforementioned freshmen live in this area (South Ft. Worth and Keller). I'm going to try and get a team setup with them, probably at somewhere like Forum in Grand Prairie, Spare Time in Arlington or AMF Showplace in Euless.
