The experience at Atlanta is the main reason why Houston will never happen. Traffic and heat/humidity (along with commercialism) was one of the big complaints there...Houston would just magnify all of those.

One of the negatives that I remember when Dallas was running for their bid was the fact of unpredictable weather in regards to rain.

It's too hot here to host an Olympics. Doubt it will ever happen.

When Dallas and Houston were in the running a few years back, they said if Texas got the bid, the games would be played in mid-June when temperatures were not as hot... the Summer games are not always in August... when they were in Sydney, they were in late September, which is like late March in the Southern hemisphere..............

I don't know...June kinda sucks heat-wise in Houston as well...and it is a wet month (2nd wettest month of the year). We need it in like April.

Chicago, Madrid, Rio, and Tokyo are the main contenders for 2016

Madrid has NO chance! back-to-back Olympics are never awarded to the same continent! Sorry Espana!

Tokyo...? one removed from Beijing...maybe

Rio...Never has a South American city hosted a summer olympics...Rio is a cluster f*** though!

Chicago...20 years removed from Atlanta...US-held olympics are always attractive to the IOC

I bet the nod goes to either Chicago or Rio

I agree with a previous poster - Houston will never get an Olympics because of the issues with Atlanta. Houston & Atlanta are seen as cities cut from the same cloth.

Edit - if I remember correctly, the heat and humidity in Atlanta was a major story line (or complaint) from the people in charge. It seems the Europeans who run the IOC were not pleased.

Chicago can afford the payola... neither Dallas, nor Houston, has ponied up, to make it interesting.

If there is a ban on heat, it is to keep the game out of the South, and into places like NY or Chicago...

Dallas' bid was not pursued, because Arlington actually submitted it, because Dallas leadership is incompetent. Also, at the time, it was deemed there weren't enough things for athletes and visitors. 6th Floor museum was just not great enough of an attraction. Also, Dallas did not have enough previous experience hosting major sporting events/championships... things like NCAA Championships, etc.

The plan was to take Fair Park, use it for an Olympic Village, and then turn it into Government Housing. Also, Jerry's World had not been committed, yet.

Venues would have been in Arlington, FtWorth, Dallas, SMU and TCU.

With Jerry's World... I could see us winning a bid. We hashed some of this YEARS ago...

Imagine -
Opening Ceremonies at Jerry's World
Futbol at Jerry's World
Track and Field - Texas Motor Speedway
Canoe/Rowing - White Rock Lake
Swimming - New SMU Complex
Badminton - UTD
Baseball - RBiA
Gymnastics - AAC
Cycling - There was a Velodrome in Frisco, which I think hasn't been kept up.
VolleyBall - TCU / SMU
Fencing - TCU / SMU

Reunion Arena is supposed to be torn down, I believe.

I think DFW could pull it off, but they REALLY would need to work together.

DFW definitely needs to build itself up as a destination place. Richardson has built the Eiseman Center, Fort Worth has the Bass Hall, Grapevine now has the Gaylord. There are other pre-existing things - Myerson, Kimball, etc.

DFW just needs to establish itself with recognition for Great Dinning (needs more 5-Star restraunts to attract the elitests), and Cultural Venues... Add a sports hot bed.

With the last 2 Womens' All-Around Gold medalist coming from Plano... If we built a kayak venue, and became a hotbed for Kayak competitions...

We need a gimmick... Something like Lone Star Park in GP did, when they launched the Jockey competition. There was no way they were breaking into something like the Triple Crown, so, they came up with something.

If Dallas had a strong mayor... maybe... but with 14-1... FORGET IT!

Too many fingers looking for a piece of the pie.
