Just a reminder that the men take on Tech tomorrow (Friday) at the Mitchell Tennis Center at 6:00. I know its Chilifest, and I know they lock the place down at a certain time on Friday, but a good student turnout would really help. Tech is always good, and it will be another very competitive match.

reasonably sure they have never won a Big XII championship. They have taken us down a couple of time. Tim Segal is a solid coach (he was on our short list) and typical of tech, they always play us tough. I suspect they are ranked about 25 (have not looked) and several of our guys think they are underranked. In any event, we need our A game to win.

...ahead of Steve Denton. Of course no one is complaining now.

Ags lose doubles point, tt takes all 3 matches. tt - 1 A&M - 0

Ags come back with a vengeance in singles. Win four in straight sets, looking good on another and even on the last. Ags win match.

Very impressive singles performance.

I thought that was as good as I have seen us play singles. Our nose dive in doubles has now run three matches, and it is hard to explain. In any event, props to Steve and Bob, and our captain Conor for getting everybodies head on straight before singles. What can you say about singles. Conor won a tough match at one is straight sets, and Austin played as well as I have ever seen at two winning one and one against a guy we had never beaten in his Tech career (he is a senior). Wil was very solid as was Marcus who supplied lots of energy on court 5. Colin continues his remarkable run at six with a very solid win (I believe he is 7-3 in his last ten matches at six, and that alone is one of the reasons we are winning, turning 3-4 into 4-3. I think Griggy wins if we don't have to play a tie breaker in the thrid. He is so talented, and Steve is coaching the heck out of him. He will be very special before all is said and done. We are competive at all six lines this year.
Props to everone who came. Good involved crowd. Btw, we play Baylor on the road Wednesday at 6. Hope we have a good bunch making the road trip. Baylor destroyed Texas 6-1 the other night in Austin. As usual Mat is up to his old stacking tricks and the coaches called his hand on it. At least we will play them straight up. Talking with Bob last night, he likes some of the match ups. Time will tell, but it is a great opportunity.

Can you elaborate on this?
gobluwolverine
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Holden, not sure if you were asking about what stacking is or about how Baylor has done this in the past, but the first part I can answer.

Stacking is when you take your best players and play them at the lower lines to possibly get a better chance at getting an overall win, while sacrificing your weaker players.

So, it would be like if we won the doubles point, then played Conor at 4, Austin at 5, and Will at 6. We would be likely (though not guaranteed) to win those three lines, and thus likely to win the match. Marcus, and Colin would likely be overmatched, and Alexy would be close, but it essentially wouldn't matter for the team if they lost.

At some levels it's allowed, at some it's not. I'm not sure what the NCAA rule book says, but I will look it up after today's ladies match if no one responds before then.

My bad, should have been more specific.

I was asking about the coaches calling him out comment. Do you have a link, or is that just something you've heard?
Raven

something I have heard, but from the very top levels. Not nearly as elaborate as the examples given, but apparantly the conference coaches must have some real authority on this issue, because he had to change his lineup. the thing is they still beat Texas badly even playing it straight up.

Looks to me like Denton and McKinley have shown they can recruit and develop players. I see nothing at this time that indicates anything other than good days are coming to Aggie tennis.

Segal didnt choose us. He has too many roots in Lubbock to leave. That place loves him, and he didnt want to move his kids.

Stupid comment. If anything, he'll be trying like heck to beat the horns so they will hire him...although I do agree that he's outta here as soon as that job comes open.

The insinuation that Steve does not want to beat Texas is insulting. Like saying Coach Royal did not want to beat OU because he went to school there....oh really....I ate dinner with Steve Sunday night, and I can assure you he is fired up about the Texas match, although we have Baylor tomorrow and Nebraska on Friday before we turn our attention to the Horns. Steve and Bob have quietly gone about their business and this years team is the best they have had....the future of Aggie tennis looks very bright. Don't know what the future holds, but in Steve Denton and Bob McKinley we have as good a coaching tandem as there is in college tennis. If you don't believe me, talk to the other coaches. Lets stay focused and finish strong.

bob and steve have the boys on the verge of the top ten for the first time in years. as long as these two guys are here, this team is going to be a force in the big xii and in the ncaa. if you think any other two coaches would have this team in this position in under three years, well, you're wrong.

Lets get a few facts straight here..Denton never graduated from TU he graduated from A&M Corpus..Secondly, he would be the coach at TU now if he had a degree at the the time the TU job was open..He will be gone if that job is open again I wish we had someone like Cass who stuck around and built this program.

Does it bother anyone that he is severley overweight? So strange he was a pro tennis player and that out of shape..

Did anyone happen to notice that Texas A&M Corpus Christi has been subjected to one of the most severe NCAA probations ever handed out to a D-1 college tennis program?

Some of you have much more inside information than I do....which is fine. Steve graduated from TAMUCC...true. Texas would have hired Steve instead of Mike Senter, but could not because he did not have a degree....not sure if it is true or not. Steve would bolt for Texas if they offered the job....not sure, but if that happened it would be because he did a great job here, not because he is the most decorated player in Texas' tennis history.
rushlimbaugh
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Raven, thought I would answer some of your questions.

#1 Steve is a graduate of TAMCC.

#2 The tennis coach at Texas spells his name Michael Center.

#3 Steve was never a candidate to replace Dave Snyder as the tennis coach at Texas in 2000.

#4 Steve will never be a candidate to be the tennis coach at Texas regardless of how he preforms as coach at Texas A&M.

#5 When you get to the final 4 two out of three years and play in the team finals for a national championship on national television you kind of get attached to your coach. With that said, the current Texas coach isn't going to be leaving anytime soon.

#6 Steve, having had great success at Texas and as a pro , is indeed considered one of the all time greats of the program. However, there are some with better records and national titles.

#7 Steve is a good coach and considering recent results, is doing a good job as coach at ATM.

I hope that answers your questions. Let me know if you have more.

rush, I hope you are joking about all of your last post.

If you read Denton's bio on aggieathletics (here http://www.aggieathletics.com/sports/m-tennis/mtt/denton_steve00.html

Denton played at Texas and is in their hall of fame, and I would guess he WILL be a possible replacement for their head coaching position if it comes open again.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The probation looks pretty bad. Was Denton the coach when it happened?

http://www.caller.com/news/2009/mar/26/ncaa-gives-islanders-athletic-programs-four-years-/

It looks like their #1 player (A Denton recruit that was #30 in the country at one point) was paid $1,500 in improper funds. I can't tell if he was also played while ineligible or if that is the volleyball player.

big...I amended my post concerning Steve record . I was thinking along the lines of individual national championships. There are those with hardware he didn't have. However, I see your point and agree.

As for he WILL be the coach at Texas some day. All I can say is your are mistaken.

Steve is not a graduate of TAMUCC, he coached there, and played at Texas in Austin.

And if you would read my post, I said I think he will be a POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT at Texas, not he will be the coach there.
jessielivermoore
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He did graduate from A&M Corpus bigfoot? You cannot be a head coach at a state school without a bachelor's degree..not sure where your getting your info...Plus he needs to drop some weight.
