Who does a person root for and why? Do they like Target more than BF Goodwrench? Is the driver or someone in the pit crew from your hometown? Is it because you like their personality? Do they even have personality? Do you like the color of their car? Is there an underdog that you can make a quick attachment too because he is losing, much like you do when you see Marshall playing Miami and it is 39-14 in the 4th quarter?
One thing I think is funny is that Nascar has recently tried to start rivalries between drivers because there are less viewers than the past few years. The problem is, how do you do that? This particular contrived rivalry is with one of the Busch brothers and Jimmy Johnson. The problem? They like each other. They might even be the same person. When you put a camera in their faces, besides sounding kinda whiny, they just answer questions in a very blah way. WWE tactics aren't going to work with this situation obviously.
Then you got guys like Tony Stewart. he drives like a dick and he is on every commercial. Why? Is he really a cool guy? He just wears sunglasses and acts vague and mysterious. Can we all agree that beyond all the hundreds of commercials these guys are in, there really is nothing personable about them? Ooh wait... one of them does back flips! Awesome.
Please don't tell me you spend 5 hours of your weekend watching this because ther might be a wreck. Go skip a rock at a pond near your house and watch the highlights on tv. They will show any wreck several times and you can slow it down on your DVR.
The thing is that NASCAR has spent a ton, and I mean like a zillion dollars on marketing their sport. The companies that sponsor events or drivers are depending on you caring about NASCAR because they are so invested that we see nearly every commercial have something to do with a driver, a car, or Bob the Enzyte guy doing laps with his stupid face.
It is like Valentine's Day... it didn't exist until the greeting card industry wanted to make more money buy getting people to buy more of their product. NASCAR is very much the same thing - It is the same sport it was when only a few million cared, and now we all get it shoved down our throats.
If you like it, that's great. Personally I follow it occasionally and at least understand what is going on. I just can’t believe how much people like it just because all the commercials and networks are telling them too. NASCAR is the Nickelback of sports.
On another note, is the "NASCAR Dads" phenomena, or the increase in viewership over the last decade been a possible by-product of people being tired of professional athletes covered in tattoos, dancing in the endzone and getting busted for felonies ranging from torturing dogs to beating their wives... Oh wait... all while they are roided up? I would say most certainly. I just hope people are choosing to watch for reasons other than a possible wreck or because of some drummed up rivalry.
