Fed almost comes back to win the match on Del Potro's serve, but misses a match point.

5-4 Fed serving for the match.

Nice. Sets up an interesting final. Soderling reminds me of Martin Verkerk, who made the finals a few years ago and lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Big serve and hits hard off the ground. I see Fed doing the same thing Ferrero did, that is ending the upstart's dream and crushing him in straight sets.

BTW didn't realize Fed was so fluent in French. Saw him speaking it in the post-match on court interview.

This guy has had an amazing career. He did not beat a slouch today. This kid if he stays hungry will be a player for many years. Hard to imagine that he won't dominate at Wimbledon when Federer hangs it up (or gets a few years older). I know the clay versus grass comparison but this Agrentine kid is hell on wheels.

Federer is a beast. Truly the greatest tennis player ever. I don't care what happens on Sunday. Federer for what he has been able to do on clay is a more complete player than Sampras. Of course Nadal is sitting there all of 22 years old with 6 majors under his belt.

Federer is from Switzerland so mowt people in that country can speak passing French. The whole west side peaks French predominantly.

Thanks goodness for fuzzy internet video feeds.

NBC needs to die in a fire. This type of coverage when interest in tennis, at least at the recreational level, is at it's highest since the 70's is pathetic. But if Bo the White House dog passes gas, they will have five hours of prime time footage.

Allez Federer!

Why are people overlooking the fact that CBS did NOT televize the US Open Men's final last year? You had to watch it on the internet. They played soap operas and their regualr day time crap.

Well, the Women's final was, to say the least "underwhelming" imo. While Safina's meltdown in the 2nd set was heartbreaking, I found Kuznetsova's lack of emotion upon her win perplexing. The crowd's lack of appreciation/enthusiasm was equally irritating. After two weeks of some of the best tennis I've watched in a couple of years, I was disappointed. Hoping the Men's final tomorrow will offer some excitement.

I agree I thought the women's final was very boring. Both players seemed to lack the energy and passion you would expect in the finals of a slam.

1. Martina Navratilova is really annoying as a commentator.

2. Please let Serena lose. Cant stand watching her or her sister play. If Serena would get in shape, she would never lose. Never.

+1 on both

When they interviewed her afterwards she said that it was both empathy for Safina (having been in her shoes before and knowing what it is like to melt down in a final) and also that she is just an understated person.

I kind of liked it. She expected to win, she acted like she had been there before, and she was gracious and thankful during her acceptance.

Personally I'm kind of tired of the same old slide on your knees and cry thing (even though that's probably what I would do).

Good point. It WAS endearing when she "gushed" about meeting Stefi Graf for the 1st time.

Anyone watching the men's final? Am I to understand that a fan got on the court and was in Federer's face?

Yeah a guy carrying a FC Barcelona flag jumped on the court and approached Federer. I had flipped the channel for a minute so I only saw a replay and not of the whole thing. It seems like security reacted pretty slowly.

awesome for Federer.

Yes, the guy came onto the court...freaked everyone out...Fed jumped back and before security got to him he was actually able to go all the way up to Fed and he appeared to have tried to put his goofy hat onto Federer, then he danced, got all the way to the other end of the court, was tackled and removed.

It shook him up for a while, as well as the fans.

Eh, it's more of the extreme west that is predominantly French. Somewhere around 2/3 of that nation speaks Swiss German/German first, and you've still got areas that are Italian and what not.

Growing up in Basel, though, it's for sure Federer is Swiss German before anything else. But, they do border France as well, and yes, I'm sure he's grown up knowing French.

His mother is from South Africa, by the way.

Edit- Being married to Mirka, I do wonder if he's picking up any Slovak.
