I have decided to get into fly fishing with my 8 year old son. I have been looking at fly rods and reels and the prices are daunting. I have been told to buy good equipment and spend approximately $800 (conservative estimate) and I have been told to buy low-end stuff to get started and thus spend less. Opinions? Any other advice? Brands? Flip Pallot are you out there?

Fly fishing in saltwater is very challenging. It takes awhile to figure out the variables such as using the right colors, tidal movement and the right retrieve. It good that you are taking your kid fishing through.

Any suggestions on fly rods, reels?

Reels are cheap and are not important. The fly rod is everything.

But this is my advice. If you don't have any experience...don't do this!

Poor advice...but thanks anyway? You don't have any idea where I live. Bye.

GO FOR IT!

Reels do count since you are in saltwater...cheap reels will rust out pretty quick. G loomis Adventure Series and Teton make reels for under $100 that will last a lifetime. THen you go for the top of the line $450 reels.

Thanks! We did...my son and I had a casting lesson yesterday morning on the beach and had a blast! My 8 year old figured it out pretty fast and I was right there with him by the end. It was hell of a lot of fun and we are really looking forward to fly fishing. We have decided to buy Sage rods and Orvis reels. Thanks for the advice. I'll check back in after our first time flyfishing.
