I was not able to follow the Ags yesterday due to work and then all the electricity was out when I got home late last night so these notes are not complete - I am very sorry about this.

For the most part, the Aggies did very well yesterday.

MEN:
Trinity Otto very unexpectedly is in second place in the decathlon race after five events. Five more events will be conducted today. Unfortunately for Trinity, his three worse events happen today. He usually does about 600 points lower on the second day events compared to his first day events. He is doing so well, maybe his adrenalin will keep him going. He should definitely place and provide us with much needed points. Gary Horn (5/6/14) of Florida is in 14th place. If he does not place and Trinity does place that will be a huge swing in our favor. A swing that we desperately need.

Sam Humphreys had a poor showing for him and finished 5th in the javelin. He was doing great all season until regionals. He did well below his usual performance at regionals and did the same yesterday here. May be freshman jitters. Whatever the problem, he still gave us 5 big points towards the championship drive. He has done extremely well this year.

WOMEN:
When a team loses a valuable teammate, sometimes the team crumbles. However, some teams will increase their effort to compensate for the loss. That is what our WOMEN did yesterday. We lost Gabby and that was certain points. We had already lost Natasha Ruddock prior to regionals. Combined, Natasha and Gabby would have earned us at lest 15 points at nationals. A 15 points loss will kill most teams - they certainly will not have a chance at Nationals.

Tiffany Peters, Ashika Charan, Dominique Duncan, and Vashti Thomas took it on themselves to earn points they were definitely not expected to earn.
Tiffany had the 17th best distance in the triple jump but finished 6th and earned us 3 points.
Ashika had the 21st best distance and finished 8th to earn us one more point.
Dominique had the 15th best time in the 200m and finished in the top 8 to advance to the finals where she will earn at least one point.
Vashti had the 13th best time in the 100H and finished in the top 8 to advance to the finals for at least one more point.
Incredible effort by these Aggies that kept us in the fight with Oregon for the Championship Trophy.

Excellent notes from clw04 on yesterdays conversations that I want to re-list:
quote:
Looking ahead to the next two days. The Oregon Men are out of the Men's team race barring a major meltdown by the top two teams.
I used the TFN formcharts and moved each person up the chart if someone did not qualify ahead of them.
Day 3:
Men
Texas A&M (36/+0): 100 (10/+4), 400 (8/0), Dec (0/0)
We did not perform this well in prelims so we may lose points from the formchart.
Florida (30/-3): 100 (10/-1), 400 (4/0), Dec (3/0),

Women
Texas A&M (24/+4): 100 (12/0), 400 (8/0)
Oregon (40/+1): 400 (6/0), 800 (5/+2), 5000 (10/0), PV (3/0)

Day 4:
Men
Texas A&M (69/+2): 200 (15/+2), 400R (8/0), 1600R (10/0), LJ (0/0)
Florida (66/-3): 400R(10/0), 1600R (8/0), LJ (10/0), SP (8/0)

Women
Texas A&M (61/0): 200 (17/+1), 100h (1/-5), 400R (10/0), 1600R (8/0), LJ (1/0), JT (0/0)
Oregon (58/-2): 1500m (1/-3), 400R (5/0), 1600R (6/0), LJ (6/0)

Formchart shows a 3 point win for both the men and women if the formcharts were to hold up. As we know the formcharts do not hold up. Every deviation from the formchart will be excruciating or joyous for both teams.

Day 3 - Friday
Listed below are today's participants from Florida and A&M (MEN) and Oregon and A&M (WOMEN)
Each individual is followed by a set of numbers.
The first number is their rank based on season's best performance.
The second number is their place prediction by T&F News.
The third number is their place in the prelims.

MEN:
Decathlon: Trinity Otto (8/-/2) in second place - very unexpected. Gary Horn (5/6/14) - Florida is in 14th place [hope he stays there]
High jump: none
Hammer: none
400H: none
100m: Gerald Phiri (7/5/5) - A&M, Curtis Mitchell (14/7/6) - A&M
800m: none
Steeple: none
400m: Calvin Smith (1/5/4) - Florida, Demetrius Pinder (3/6/6) - A&M, Tabarie (7/4/8) - A&M

Extremely important races for the men in the 100m and 400m. These two races will definitely decided if we have a chance at the title on Saturday. We have to do better than expected (or Florida has to do much worse than expected- which is unlikely).

We have to outdo Calvin in the 400m.

WOMEN:
Pole vault: Melissa Gergel (3/6) - Oregon
Shot put: none
400H: none
100m: Jeneba Tarmoh (6/5/1) - A&M, Porscha Lucas (4/2/4) - A&M
800m: Anne Kesselring (12/6/5) - Oregon
400m: Jessica Beard (2/2/3) - A&M, Keshia Baker (1/3/6) - Oregon
5K: Alex Kosinski (6/5) - Oregon, Nicole Blood (12/3) - Oregon [Nicole finished 3rd in 10K on Wednesday]

Jessica has to finish ahead of Keshia in the 400m.

I wonder if anyone has a thought on the effect of the relatively cool, rainy weather that is typical for Eugene this time of year. I noted that several of our sprinters seemed to be doing better than expected with not their best times. I would think the warm weather schools would be affected the most.

I know Humphreys had over an hour delay yesterday, which could have effected his throws. Despite that, my understanding is that he brought unexpected points in for us.

I'm still optimistic. The cool, rainy weather at the Big 12 Championships and regionals seemed to have been good training for us. Let's hope Florida is still looking for those 90 degree days that will never happen in Eugene!

I think cool weather might comparatively help warm weather teams, not hurt them. Athletes, especially those that train in distance events, should benefit from hot weather training, but cool weather racing. There may be other factors - but strictly oh physiology - we should fare well in cool weather. So should Florida.

If the meet were in Houston or Florida now - I think Oregon would suffer badly with the heat and humidity.

Humphreys was listed first or second all season in the NCAA Javelin. The person who was ranked first – Cyrus Hostetler of Oregon – actually finished 10th yesterday and did not make the finals. So we were hoping Sam would win the competition but threw only 70.32m. At the Big 12 Meet, he threw over 74 meters (74.31.). His best this season was 76.71, which would have won the competition yesterday. His 74.31 at the Big 12 meet would have been second yesterday for 8 points.

To make up Humphrey's four points lost, Otto needs to finish in 5th or better.

Otto is presently 258 points ahead of that mark!

What is terrible is that he could lose all those in the mile which he is not very good!

Last year, he finished with 7652. If he records the same scores in the next four events as last year, he will finish with 7728 which should receive points but maybe not enough for 5th place.

Keep it up Trinity!

The next one (discus) and the last two (javelin and 1500m) are usually killers for Trinity. Hope he can do much better than usual in these three events. He is good in the Pole Vault.

I have noticed that you have made several informative comments on Trinity this year. Do you know him?

No, not at all! Just a fan of Aggie Sports!

In fact, I stated yesterday that he had four career bests but that wasn't true as I found out today. Some how, last year's NC was left out of my research. He did better in the 100 last year. However, from what I have found in research, his LJ, HJ, and DT were all personal bests!

I don not know him and am talking about him the most right now because I think he is very key to our winning this thing for the Men! If he gets those 4 points, it will be HUGE!

Florida's Horn has second best disc us thus far.
clw04

50/50.

If you look at the numbers posted above, Track and Field News predictions based on all the performances prior to the meet along with who didn't qualify for finals puts the men and women winners by 3 with Otto getting a point. The formcharts never correctly predict the results so there plus and minus for each event. Who outperforms or underperforms their predicted ranking will decide who wins the title.

The men have more chances at improving their standing since Florida has a couple people who are predicted to win their events scoring most of their remaining points while we have 2 in 100, 2 in the 200, and 2 in the 400 to score points.

I greatly appreciate your help. I type in some of his data and calculated that he scored 3308 and 3494 in the last day’s events in the Big 12 meet and in last year’s NCAA meet.

Does that seemed accurate to you?
MidTnAg

TXCity – clw04 is correct.
In the MEN, it is between Florida and us – they were heavily favored a couple of weeks ago.
In the Women, it is between Oregon and us – they are slight favorites being on their home turf and their own weather.

The 4x400 might decided both titles.

This was on an Oregon Web site
UO director of track and field Vin Lananna is already pointing to Florida as the team to beat at the NCAA meet on the men’s side, while the UO women should be in the title hunt against Texas A&M.

“It will be very hard for the (UO men) to win nationals,” Lananna said on Thursday. “Florida is very good. If they do everything right, there’s no way they can lose. We can challenge for the title as long as we do everything right and they do something wrong. That’s what the NCAAs are all about ... I think we’re good (on the women’s side). We’re talented, competitive and we’ve made smart decisions. It’s up to our kids to be able to survive this meet in Austin.”

Last year's NC was 3514 in Day 2 events.

The BigXII was terrible for Otto and you should not consider it.

Last year he scored 885 in the 100. This year is 845.

Last year he was 696 in discus which was 41.55m. I cannot get to the live feed at work. What did he throw today?

Horn and Otto are even at PV. Matching Horn's best would be good!
