I am really envious of the track/facilities they have at Oregon. The internet video/sound is high quality. The internet updates was excellent as well. They must love t/f up there.

Unless I heard it wrong, but the announcer kept saying Bryan Miller was a freshman.

Did everyone we expected to qualify after day 1 do so? Any surprises?

A&M held serve and did what they needed to do on both the womens and mens.

The only disappointment is probably Duncan not making it in the 100, but Collier did.

Florida men and FSU men both held serve and qualified their point winners to Des Moines.

LSU's woman hurdler who was picked 5th on the formchart did not qualify and will cost LSU somewhere around 3-4 points at the championships.

I was hoping Phiri would find his old 200 form just one last time...I guess it wasn't to be.

Other than that, it's been a pretty good showing.

T&F News will publish a final form chart before Des Moines. Take it with a grain of salt. Form charts are only as good as the research that goes into them, and particularly in the sprints, T&F News just doesn't get it done. But they seem to be the only game on the block unless you're willing to do the computer time yourself.

Duncan making it through in the 100 was a long shot - she didn't q last year either. She has improved this season but not enough - she had one teriffic performance - perhaps next season. Dominique, like Porscha Lucas, is much better at 200m - just watch her run the curve in the 4X100.

On the plus side, in spite of losing a qualifer in the women's 400, Mayo making it through in the 100H could be big. Gabby has not been her old self since her injury in last year's Big 12 meet. If she can get it back for just a few days of top performance, it's gold.

Oregon lost big when Amber Purvis pulled up lame in the 200m and didn't qualify again. Last year she was dq due to a false start at regionals. She's not much of a threat to score at 100m even if she's able to run in Des Moines. She is also a huge loss to both of the Ducks' relay teams.

Duncan's run is dispointing in that she hadn't just beat the girl from Texas, who ran 8th today, but had crushed her at 2 or 3 different tracks this year.

After Anderson from OU beat her by a few 100ths at the MJ Classic (as she did today), Duncan came out and solidly beat her at the Big 12 meet. It gave further hope that she could run with these gals. She has been running alongside Collier most of the year.

She's definately better in the 200, and I wasn't expecting her to run wild on that track in that weather. However, imo, she had shown well against some of those qualifiers on a consistent basis.

Maybe 'longshot' is a bit strong - but I gave her about a 50/50 shot.

quote:

against is the key word there - she ran in a different heat. That matters.

quote:
...on that track in that weather...

The 100m times are not all that great, but I was a little surprised the 200m times were as good as they were given the rain and cold. All qualifiers under 23.50 and top 4 23 flat or better.

Chalonda Goodman from Texas is a better sprinter than her times have shown. She's likely still not at 100% recovered from her foot injury last season. At any rate, she and Duncan ran in different heats, so it's hard to say Dominique should have beaten her. Shawna Anderson from Oklahoma is a surprise qualifier - I wouldn't have expected her to make it. Note that all 3 who qualified on time were in the same heat - the second IIRC, with significant helping wind. Maybe if they had gone head to head.

That's part of the problem with the regional formats, particularly for sprinters. All they have to do is be top 3 to advance. For those who end up qualifying on time it's almost luck of the draw as to which heat they draw. Hardly ever does anyone run their best times under those circumstances. Note Tiffany Townsend q'd fastest at 100m, again in the heat with the most significant helping wind. Yet IIRC, she's never beaten Jeneba at either 100m or 200m. Head to head is where the proof is.

Florida men lost one of their TJ guys. The one who was projected 6th or so. Not big points, but it will be a close meet and all the points matter.

Does anyone have a good feel re how we are now positioned for the NCAA championship vs. the past two years? Both men and women? Better, worse or about the same?

Seems like both the men and women are in line for another top-3 finish. The championship will be determined by the favorites making unexpected point gains/losses.

Alright, a little help here. So, only the individual qualifiers (not the entire team) make it to the National Championships? However, based on the points earned by these individuals (or team's if we're talking about relays), the points are then added up to determine total points by school and final rankings?
Aggie-matic

They can't allow the whole team to go. Too many athletes. They track meet would be unbearable with so many heats of the 100 meters (for example). So you have to qualify. I think scoring is 1st through 8th.

Points are given on 1 - 8, but there is a bonus for finishing 1st or 2nd in that there is a 2 point gap between those places:
1 - 10 points
2 - 8 points
3 - 6 points
4 - 5 points
5 - 4 points
6 - 3 points
7 - 2 points
8 - 1 point
