Bill Byrne pulled the plug on BK today.

Via @aggieathletics

"Bill Byrne announced today that women’s tennis head coach Bobby Kleinecke’s contract will not be renewed. Nat'l search to begin immediately."

Glad it's finally official. I was getting an itchy trigger finger.

Good luck to Coach K but it has been time to make a move for a while.

So who do you want us to go after? Who is your candidate to take the spot?

I would love for $B to do like he did in track and go out and steal the best coach available. In tennis, spending an extra $50,000 a year can get you the best in the business.

Lauren Meisner at SMU made the Sweet 16 this year. I'm sure she could be convinced to take the job.

Joey Scrivano at Baylor might have it too good there, but can you imagine what he could do for the Aggies?

Bryan Shelton, Georgia Tech (won the national championship there a few years ago).

Meisner: very hot right now, not ready yet IMO, maybe in a few years.

Joey: HELL. NO.

Shelton: great guy, everybody loves him, national championship caliber. Could be on the list.

Maybe Byrne can take a little of that Mark Turgeon money and send it across the street. I bet Klienecke was paid pretty well, too, after all these years.

It's a shame it came to this. He did some good things, but his career went a little the way of our last baseball coach. I wish Byrne would make a similar move with the volleyball staff.

STATEMENT FROM Bobby Kleinecke:
"I want to thank Lynn Hickey and John David Crow for giving me an incredible opportunity 26 years ago. I am very proud of the accomplishments that my teams have put in the record books over the years, but I am more proud of the people that I recruited to represent Texas A&M for a lifetime. I have always tried to do everything the right way. My family has sacrificed a great deal over the years and I have missed a lot of my kids growing up with all the traveling the job entails. I plan on enjoying the time with my family and celebrate the graduation of my youngest from high school this weekend. I am looking forward to a new door opening up in the near future."

I think the Corbelli's are good people, but how have they survived? Especially with the run tu has made. It's not Byrne's MO to let a program continue like this for so long.

I think Meisner is the way to go. She is the hottest young up and coming coach around. She can recruit, and given the resources we have that SMU doesn't, she could recruit more Americans. She has done great things at SMU, and has gotten better each year. Mind you, she beat A&M this year before beating FSU, and reaching the sweet 16 for the first time since 1987.

I doubt that Joey would leave Baylor, and I don't really want him representing our school.

BK's firing was waaaaaayyyyyy overdue.

BB still has another huge problem to fix in a program that needs not to be named.

I would rather gouge out my eyes than watch joey in maroon.

I wouldn't be surprised if the SMU coach has already sent in her resume. I wish more consideration was given to Mark but I doubt $bill will give him a shot.

Bobby represented the A&M community with class and dignity throughout his time with the tennis program. I thought we made some progress this year, but in the end it was the inability to attract top talent to Aggieland which led to the end of his program. We now have the opportunity to make a major move, and I trust that Bill Byrne will find a great coach to work with our ladies.

I would like to see Mark get it, but don't think $Bill will hire him without head coaching experience. Mark would take the team to the next level without a doubt in my mind!

It's about freaking time. Great job Byrne. Finally getting serious about women's tennis. Next is Corbelli in the Fall.

Mark COULD be a great head coach, but thus far he hasn't produced results at A&M (though I recognize that he can't overrule BK all the time) He still has that odor of an average program on him, and that's going to make the rebuilding process significantly more difficult, versus someone like the SMU coach who could come in with last year's success.

Schools don't change tennis coaches like they do football or basketball...we might only have one opportunity to find a new tennis coach for the next decade-plus, and I'd prefer they find one who has proven a little bit more than Mark has.

Dumb...The dude is an Aggie tennis legend and knows more about Coaching tennis than Coach K could've ever dreamed of...

I like an Aggie taking over not only an Aggie but someone with the pedigree of Weaver.

The only Aggie I can think of that would be remotely qualified for it would be Mark.

And if Mark knows more about coaching tennis than the guy that was there for 26 years, why didn't they just move Mark in a while back? Or why is Mark not a head coach somewhere else?

And don't try and tell me I am defending BK. Just asking you to backup your statement with some sort of fact.

Your wink implies you're kidding, but I think you might be right. How else could he hate BK so much and still think that MW is the second coming? It's all clear now.

Well, if we take your word for fact, that's not saying much for Mark's ability to coach, is it?

I kid, I kid. Mark might very well make a great head coach, but I'm with the rest. I think you go with a more proven coach, preferably a head coach if we can get one. A&M has the resources, the facilities, and I think our men's success and the success of women's programs around us suggests you can recruit in Texas.

I'd like to see the guy from Arkansas in a Gary Blair coup. I'd have the aforementioned on a flight to Fayetteville right this minute. I don't know of any special connection to Arkansas, but I suppose he'd probably be too expensive. He's got it pretty good up there.

I don't agree with the firing of BK although I do think the program can do better. But, has it really been that bad? Weaver would be the coach of the future, but it won't happen now. It's a shame to see BK and MW go when next year sounds like it will be a good one with the new recruiting class coming in. The SMU coach has done well, but she has the personality of the thing I dropped off in the toilet a little while ago and has very little knowledge of the game. A&M can do better than her!

Aggietennisfan- her teams win more than BK did, so she must have some knowledge of the game. You obviously haven't watched her much on the court.

Fair question look at their backgrounds, Weaver experience on the pro tour, top 25 Div 1 tennis player....Plenty of coaching of top juniors etc,etc..

As far why he isn't a head coach prior could it be money?? He could make more in the private sector, maybe he wasn't motivated until now?? Idk I'm not him...

Coach K on the other hand was the Head Coach at Bryan HS what was it back then 3a??? You never see those types of coaches go from small town HS to major Div 1 program anymore...Let's be honest he was in the right place at the right time good for him ..

You guys seem to like how he was a good Aggie, nice guy..Well thats all the things Weaver is with a bad ass tennis background to back it up.

True, you don't see coaches make that high school to college move ANYMORE. It was 26 years ago.

Dont get me wrong, I like Mark a lot, and I think he is more than qualified. Not even sure he would want it. Being a head coach is not for everyone. I just think Lauren might be a better fit

Exactly. College programs were picking women's coaches from high school left and right in that era. The whole college women's sports thing was still catching on and the best coaching talent wasn't neccasarily found in the college ranks.

Shoot, a lot of good coaches quit college gigs for awhile because they often didn't pay as well as high school gigs. My father was one of those guys.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Bigfoot I know Lauren and her father and she doesn't have a high level of knowledge of the game. High school level at best. Lauren has recruited good players no doubt, but that doesn't necessarily mean she knows the game that well. A monkey could look like they are doing a good job coaching on the court if their players are good.
