Another 5 set win for the Aggies this year. The primary difference between this year and last years team is not so much different players on the court but rather the mental focus to win 5th sets and not give up.
In the first two sets, Oklahoma's block was outstanding recording 12 total blocks in 2 sets. Our setter tried too much to make offensive plays by dumping instead of running the offense. But after the break we came out wanting the win and took it to them about midway through with Miller going off behind the setter time after time in what was easily her career best game statistically. She was not to be stopped and fittingly won the final point in set five on a slide attack.
Mellanger started at libero and had a great first set in the loss but moved back to OH for the remainder of the match to try to get more production at OH2 but it was about the same as Ringel had in first set. But the changes made at the break shifted the focus to the right half of the court especially behind the setter with Kastmo and Miller.
Black statistically didnt have a great match but looked much better towards the end and her back row attacking while not scoring huge amount of points were good solid swings that caused them to be out of system a lot more that a back row attack should have them so she had a lot of netural swings but they affected the other teams performance. Barker for Oklahoma, the best setter in the conference in my opinion, had us guessing a lot, and wrong often early during the game. We were able to block a couple of the middle attacks from very awkward angles that Iowa State and Oklahoma do so well and their offense became a bit more predictable. I give credit to ther coaching staff in making sure we fronted the middle attck and did a much better job defending their RS Boularsky (sp??) in the final half of the match. A great effort and told the people next to me I thought we had a great shot after winning the match after set four because we had closed out set fives this year except for Xavier on a netural court and you could say the Israel National Team but that was exhibition.
Take care of Tech on the road in a week and come home for tough Iowa State match and a big win their could get us to 6-2 after the first round.
