So Tennessee's Trembley is out as head coach. Something you don't see often in the sport of swimming. Anybody know what happened?

The story on collegeswimming.com says "terminated for adequate cause, namely gross misconduct...."

Doesn't say specifically what he did wrong. But they probably won't say since it is a personnel issue. Must have been bad bad bad.

I've got a hunch that I'm working on getting confirmed. Will let you know if I figure it out.

Yikes, just heard what it was. It's pretty bad - not Sandusky bad, but still quite deserving of termination.

Tennessee defines gross misconduct as:

"theft or dishonesty; gross insubordination; willful destruction of University property; falsification of records; acts of moral turpitude; reporting for duty under the influence of intoxicants; illegal use, manufacture, possession, distribution, or dispensing of controlled substances or alcohol; disorderly conduct; provoking a fight ..."

I am guessing that perhaps this was a moral turpitude issue....?

He is a great guy who just really struggled after the death of his long time assistant while also dealing with some health issues. My heart goes out to him.

Spice - there's more to it than that. Think about what sorts of problems begin with "struggling to cope with personal health issues and the loss of a close friend".

You don't get fired for struggling with the death of a close friend or colleague or health issues.

I get it that these issues can cause other problems. But what did Trembley do to get fired?

Apparently law enforcement is now involved. From the Knoxville News Sentinel:

"The finding of gross misconduct led us to turn this case over to the proper law enforcement authorities," Margie Nichols, UT's vice chancellor for communications, said in a statement."

The article suggests that the LE group investigating is usually involved in fraud cases.

Stole money?

Blastoff has already been quite generous with the hint he's throwing out. Not too hard to figure out if you think about it.

There's at least two issues in play here. They may be loosely related, though I haven't been able to tie that knot yet.

Needless to say, despite winning SEC coach of the year last year, things were not alright in Knoxville.
