I was looking at the scores for the Hunter seat competition. Why did our first rider listed not have a score? I'm not familiar with Equestrian competition, so a little extra explanation might be needed. But just looking at raw numbers on the score sheet it looks like if she would have scored 123 or better we would have won. And seeing as the lowest score in the competition was 125, 123 seems like a relatively easy accomplishment. Not to take anything away from the overall championship though, that's fantastic. Congratulations to all the girls.

Curious myself, I looked up the rules as to what would cause a score of zero. An "error of test" results in a score of zero. The following is from the rule book:

Error of test. An error of test is when a rider does not perform a required movement called for in a test.
(1) Rider never starts the required maneuver.
(2) Rider starts the pattern before the audible and/or visual signal is given.
(3) Rider exits the arena before completing the pattern. In competition arenas without clear boundaries the judge
should eliminate the rider when he/she sees all four legs outside the markers.
(4) Rider turns the wrong direction or performs a maneuver tracking the incorrect direction.
(5) Rider adds or omits a movement or figure (including the halt as a movement.)

The flat test is a pattern they must ride - similar to a mini-dressage test. If one of the above things happens, during their ride, the judge gives them an overall score of 0.

And as someone who trains and show horses, sometimes stuff just happens. Horses are not always the most calm, cooperative and reliable creatures - LOL

I was at the competition - the rider went off course - DNF/score zero. Everyone - incl baylor crowd felt bad for the young lady - there was no cheering or clapping of the sort / much like a football game where a star player goes down.

That is too bad and I feel really bad for her. One of those things. Happens to everyone at one point or another. I am sure she felt horrible about it. When I saw her score of zero, I was praying things wouldn't end in a tie.
