Just called and showed up at a press conference...

"I'm going to make this short and sweet, this will be my last tournament"

I'm pretty shocked, he's still in good shape. Wasted career IMO, guy should have learned to serve and volley, one grand slam with his talent, even with the field he was in, he had the ability for more.

It's a good time for him to retire. Heck of a press conference too. Didn't always like his attitude, but you can't deny all of the incredible things he's done for American tennis.

Meh, he is one of three men (del Potro, Gaudio, and Safin) not named Federer, Nadal, or Djokivic to win a single major since Federer won his first major at Wimbledon 2003 (right before Roddick won his US Open).

Nadal and Del Potro are the only guys to ever beat Roger in a final, would have been nice to pull out Wimbledon, but he came damn close, and that's something Murray, Djokovic, Hewitt and others cannot say about their finals with Federer.

the guy peaked right after the arguably greatest player ever arrived on the scene and was still right behind him when Nadal and Djok showed up. I think he could have been a great and had about 3 or 4 more championships if Roger Federer hadn't ever been born.

but he was born and his career will always be a "what could have been."

the guy was the best America had for about 10 years and will always be one of my favorites.

The slice backhand was the downfall of his game. He learned to volley, had one of the biggest forehands and serves in the game. But the slice backhand killed his career.

I will miss watching him even though I couldn't stand him much. He was good for American tennis.

Just watched the presser where he announced it. I have been a public Roddick basher at times, that is for certain. However, it was hard to watch. He will be missed on the tour.

Andy played well today. Variety in the serve, stepping into the forehand...and Tomic pretty much quit after the second set.

Roddick's match last night was fun to watch. Patrick McEnroe took the words right out of my mouth when he said during the match that this is the Andy Roddick we have been wanting to see for a couple of years now. He was taking the ball early, just crushing forehands and he was coming to net often.

Really going to miss having Andy on tour. His on-court antics made me cringe at times (as did his passive play), but I liked that he was a fighter. If he took the court, you knew you were going to get his best. There is so much focus on what he wasn't that it's easy to forget what he was. He was a top-ten player for ten straight years. He won at least one tournament for 11 consecutive years. Sure, Federer had his number and he struggled to get over the hump against him in majors, but that could be said about just about anyone.

Roddick did play well Saturday. I'm convinced the key to Andy's game is when he aggressively hits a two-hander (like he did Saturday). When he does, other players have to respect him from the ground. When he ends slicing too much on the backhand side, his opponents pound him into the ground over there.

Andy will go down as having one of the best serves of all time. Especially given his size.

His forehand stroke is nothing to write home about (although effective). His backhand is barely good enough to compete at his level.

His forehand has gone downhill bigtime since his early years. When he came on the tour, his FH was top 5 biggest in the game. Now it's below average.

Looks like this may be the end for Andy. Del Potro got a break in the third set. I hope Andy takes this thing to play just one more time.

wasn't a big fan. Didn't like his attitude many times along with local stories in Austin about him, but hell of an athlete and US tennis player and even though it looks like the end for him here I'm rooting for him. Tough to see the best US player since Pete and Andre go out, but he's fighting hard. DelPo looks too strong right now.

Hate the media dump on him. Not a mention of Delpo.

ESPN interviewed DelPo immediately after the match.
