7th on the 3M would be good enough only if the same six that finished above her on 3M are the only ones that finish higher than her on another board. Many of the same names will finish high, which allows more divers who finish lower to get selected. All we know now is that Maren Taylor, Shelby Cullinan, and Cassie Weil are certain to make it.

I highly doubt seventh will get picked up on 3m. Today can go very different than yesterday. 1m is open to everyone since most girls do the exact same dives. Girls like Shelby or Cassie will not likely end up top 5 or 6 on one meter. If Becca dives like she did at SECs on 1m she should make top 3.

And yes the amount of spots given this year are based on performances at NCAA last year.

Can't wait to watch everyone swim at NCAA and hopefully dive too!

I agree.

Today is going differently. Maren Taylor diving well. Cullinan didn't make finals. St. Germain looks good so far. Of course some girls are just better/worse on 1M vs. 3M. Really good 1M divers are often very athletic and powerful off the board - where height is especially valuable compared to the 3M.

St. Germain finishes 3rd on 1M. Her odds improve significantly. We know now that no matter who wins platform tomorrow Maren Taylor, Figueroa, Cullinan, and Weill will advance.

Rebecca made NCAA with 3rd. Top 3 on both springboards and winner of platform automatically qualify.
Whoop!!

Would be nice to see Jesse win the platform tomorrow!

If anyone wants to read more about the diving scenarios, here's the breakdown:

http://swimswam.com/qualifying-tightens-in-zone-d-through-tuesday-morning/

St. Germain is in on the basis of her 1-meter finish, which is good because the 3-meter wouldn't have cut it.

Long story short on McCauly - things have definitely not broken in her favor. Platform specialists always need "help" in this Zone format, and they didn't get any here. Still, if she wins platform (very doable, she may even be the favorite) or gets 2nd and one of the 6 girls already qualified wins (less likely than her winning, probably) then she's in. Texas' Shelby Cullinan, the Big 12 Champ, has a lot of incentive to go after a win...the only chance for her teammate Meghan Houston to qualify for NCAA's is if the top two finishers are among the 6 already qualified, and among those 6, Cullinan might be the best platform diver.

In other words: McCauly, if she brings it like she did at SEC's, certainly has better than a 50/50 qualifying shot. Much better.

One thing that could help Jessie is that the judging at Zones is apparently favoring style and entries more than athleticism and difficulty. The judges at SECs were "true" judges while the judging at Zones is coaches. Jessie is a "clean" diver with a modest DD compared to some. She executes very well. Sometimes judges are more impressed with power and "big" dives.

So if I understand that correctly, it is possible (although unlikely) that the 2nd place platform woman does NOT receive an invite?

quote:
H2O - yes it is possible. But it would require someone to win/place high on one board, and do really badly on the other two. Most likely though is that the platform winner will also place high on some other board. Or the 3M winner will also place high in 1M, all of which frees a slot for another diver to advance.

After the women’s 3-meter, no more than the top two on the platform can qualify for NCAA’s from Zone D. If the winner is one of the 6 who have already qualified, then the runner-up also goes to NCAA’s.

WOMEN’S PRIORITY LIST
1. Platform – 1st Place
2. Three-Meter – 1st Place — Maren Taylor, Texas
3. One-Meter – 1st Place – Loren Figueroa, Missouri
4. Three-Meter – 2nd Place — Shelby Cullinan, Texas
5. One-Meter – 2nd Place — Margaret Keefer, Minnesota
6. Three-Meter – 3rd Place — Cassie Weil, LSU
7. One-Meter – 3rd Place — Rebecca St. Germain, Texas A&M

8. Platform – 2nd Place
9. Three-Meter – 4th Place — Margaret Keefer, Minnesota

Pulling for Macauly for the Ags... and statistical anomaly!

Macaulay seems to be a very inconsistent diver which can hurt her in this meet since they combine prelims and finals scores. She is going to have to dive like finals at SECs twice to win it. Her DD are a little bit lower than some other girls so she needs to hit them all. I think Cassie Weil and Shelby Cullinan are two very good platform divers and are both already qualified so we will see!

I think Jesse missed out on NCAA last year by one position so it would be awesome for her to make it this year, although the stakes are higher! Go Macaulay go!

Through 3 rounds, Maccauly 6th. About 17 points out of first. Had a tough first dive, but has been pretty solid since.

Macaulay is 5th after thr first 5 rounds. Weil, Cullinan are 1-2, both already qualified. That means Macaulay has 22.60 points to make up in 5 dives, plus jump three girls to qualify.

FWIW...I think she would be in 2nd if they ignored the first round, where everyone else had really good dives.

The interview with Julia was terrific as usual. It is great to hear that she is living in Texas. And once again she is a great champion of Texas A&M.

Another NCAA analysis on Swimming World Magazine - this time by Kim Brackin. Pretty credible overall. Brackin more believable than Commings, who says A&M doesn't have relay strength. I think he forgot to look at the psych sheet on the medley relays.

Agreed, she really did give big props to Steve and the girls which is nice to see.

I think the Aggies can definitely be top 3. It will all depend on who wants it more! Should be a very exciting meet. It's going to be hard to sleep tonight!

Unfortunately this morning didn't go so well for the ladies. Hopefully they leave today behind and come back stronger tomorrow.
