I'm either dating myself and/or haven't been paying attention but since when do you play a let on a serve?

In DI men's tennis, you play lets on serves. This is different than pro tennis where they replay a let.

I'm assuming they made the rule that way to avoid players cheating and calling lets on serves they just didn't get a good return on.

They made the rule to speed up the game

Duke is right, it was changed due to many "phantom" let calls on unreturnable serves. Too many guys were trying to replay serves claiming a let. Took the cheating out of the equation.

They changed the rule for world team tennis to speed up play. Hopefully eventually they will change it for all levels.

Cool, thanks. I thought it was cool - makes for interesting points when that ball pops up. LSU was the benefactor of quite a few of those last night against the Ags. I guess it washes out in the end but I was perplexed watching...

Another rule change is a point penalty for calling for a medical timeout. This had been sorely abused the past couple of years and not results in going into the code and will progress through point, game, match if a player is so inclined to call for medical timeouts. I hope I am correct in the progression

The let rule is also being experimented w/ on the pro tour. It was in use for the first 3 months of 2013 at challenger level events (one level below ATP tour).

not a fan of the rule becoming widely implemented. I do not recall a match that was markedly longer b/c of lets.

I do understand that there had been a great deal of abuse in calling lets in the men's college game, thus the ruling.

The rule is not for length of matches.

It is to put a stop to intentional cheating. In men's d1 tennis it was a huge problem

got it bigfoot. I can certainly understand how that would be a problem in singles.

Play a lot of tennis at the 4.5 level and it is not something I have ever run across. I would hate the see it changed at our levels.

Is this only on the D1 level? I don't remember it being a thing in HS (05).

It is only D1 mens tennis right now. Like another poster said, they have experimented with it on the lower tier pro level, but it has been discussed as a rule change over all of tennis.

I know that teaching it to middle school kids is a pain in the butt!
