Interesting stat I found off the ITA stat of former college players competing at Wimbledon. No Aggies to be found. Kind of strange that the "word around the local Aggie tennis community" is that if you want to be a professional you should come to Texas A&M to get you to that level. There are no Aggies to be found. Please Coach Denton Lovers explain why this is.

I'm not privy to the word in the local tennis community of College Station but any idiot knows that the odds of any college player from any program making it on the tour are very, very slim. Typically your NCAA Champion isn't even in the top 500 of the world coming out.

And anybody trying to make this a Coach Denton thing clearly has a personal axe to grind with him or is really uninformed about the gap between pro tennis and college tennis.

But thanks for the list, that was actually very interesting.

I play at one of the local country clubs and I just hear this quite often. I have no axe to grind with Denton. I personally think he has done ok, but I just hear this quite often. You are correct in saying that very few college players have a real shot at the pros and it doesn't really matter where they go to school.

I agree with you that overall Denton has done a good but not great job, although I think this year he did a great job with what he had.
To take the Ags to the next level he's going to have to get a top foreign player. To date , he hasn't been able to pull that off.
Maybe he needs to enlist Jaffe's help. He sure knows how to recruit.

For some real trivia, Benjamin Becker beat Andre Agassi in the 2006 US Open in Andre's final pro match on the tour. I was at the Open that year but couldn't get a ticket for that match

Interesting stat Slick! There are a lot more players in the pro ranks that played in college than I would have thought. Baylor also had Benadick Dorsh who was as good as Becker in college but just didn't do as well in the pros.

That's the word on the street because that's what they are telling people. What else are they going to say? I'm sure a lot of college coaches are trying that line.

Denton is doing fine. He should have fought harder to keep Kleinsasser around. Jaffe making him look bad!

Word on the street is that Denton and his goons ran off Kleinecke. If that is true it sure has backfired because you are correct in saying that Joffe is making Denton's accomplishments look pretty mediocre. I am not a huge fan of all the internationals on the women's side but Joffe has sure got the job done and at lightning speed.

Not only did he help run off BK, but he was instrumental in hiring Joffe over several other highly qualified applicants. Thought that Joffe wouldn't push back against him as much, and it would make Denton look better. Major backfire.

If Denton helped run off BK, then he should get a raise and a contract extension.

The women's team would still be a marginal top 30 program instead of a top 5 with BK at the helm.

Nobody can argue from looking at it only by a results perspective that running Bobby Kleinecke off was the correct thing to do. However, lots of things have come out about how it all came down and how he was treated as far as his exit from Texas A&M. It was very cruel! People can say what they wants about his results but the guy was a solid person for Texas A&M and the community for a very long time and he did not deserve to be treated the way he was treated on his way out.

One could argue McEnroe and Connors as "for" college tennis, but there are still very few examples

Kleinecke needed to go. And you can't compare college women's and men's tennis. The scholarships are 8 to 4.5.

Typical same idiots here, like little froggie boy.. Denton has done good but not great.
RodgerDodger
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't understand what you mean by the scholarships. All the men's programs have the same amount of scholarships and all the women programs have the same amount of scholarships. Therefore, all the men's teams are on equal playing fields with other men's teams and ditto for the women. They are all going to battle with the same ammunition so I don't get what you mean. Of course you can't compare the men and the women, but the scholarships have nothing to do with anything. Please explain.
RebAg13
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yes they do. You can bring in a whole team of girls and compete on equal footing on scholarships. In the men only the top players get almost full rides and you can only sign about 3 or 4 of them so the swings in talent will be greater cause you won't always have the money for the best players every year.
RodgerDodger
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I still don't see how it is different. What if a women's team has all underclassmen? They would have no scholarships to give either. It seems all the same to me. It is just a matter of managing the scholarships that you have. The only difference is the men can split up the scholarships and the women can't.
RebAg13

It matters in recruiting. You have to have scholarships to get the top recruits. Men won't always have it. Women will.

Great analysis!
You've shown that it makes no difference where you play in college.

And if people at your country club have been saying that, well find some smarter people to hang out with

I don't agree with the statement that Denton did well for the team that he had to work with this year. I don't buy the statement in previous forums that they are young. Only 2 or 3 players in the lineup throughout the year were freshman. All the players in the lineup were the best of the best American juniors for the most part. Every coach in the nation would have given their left nutt for Harrison Adams and he played #3 and had a ton of experience well before college. The whole lineup are top blue chip players and based solely on talent are as good as any team in the nation for the most part. Underachieving is the problem!
RebAg13
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Not this past year. Austin and Jeff's senior year should have started with a better spring but you can't say underachieved from last years group of freshman and sophomores. Everyone was hoping for a sweet 16 and that's what they achieved. The next two years we need to be top 6-8 if not higher.
bigboyaggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If they start having years where they finish 6-8 then I will stop saying they are underachieving, but after all the years that Denton has been here they have yet to do so.

And we need to be 6-8. We've recruited our guys who have scholies and should have a good 2 year run minimum.
