How much do you really know about Texas A&M Rugby?

Did you know that A&M Men’s Rugby team is getting ready to defend it’s ARC Conference Championship?

The Allied Rugby Conference consists of three Big 12 schools (Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Baylor), Sam Houston State, and the Aggies. The Aggies are under the direction of head coach Brett Mills. Coach Mills has over 27 years of rugby experience as both a player, and a coach. Last season, the coach’s son, Conor Mills led the team in both conversions and penalty goals. Unfortunately for the team, he graduated, and is no longer with the team, leaving a huge hole at FlyHalf. Matt Theodore, a sophomore, takes over for Mills. He will be one to watch in the upcoming ARC Spring Season.

I recently spoke with Grayson Dowlearn, the president of Texas A&M’s Rugby Club. Commenting on the loss of Mills, among other seniors, Dowlearn said, “We have a lot of new and young players, but with plenty of talent. [We aren’t too] worried, because we are well coached and our veterans have the experience and skill to teach our younger players.”

Junior Michael Stawick added, “I think the fall season went pretty well. We lost some key guys from last year so I’d say we’re rebuilding, but we have a group of talented guys and are heading in the right direction to win some big matches this spring. We will continue to grow as a team, as well as a club.”

The Aggie Rugby Team will start its season at home against St. Edwards, before beginning its ARC 2014 XVs Season in Huntsville against Sam Houston State. Besides their ARC schedule, the team also travels to Arkansas State, which Dowlearn describes as “some of the best competition in the nation.” The full schedule is below:

2/1 vs. St. Edwards
2/8 at Sam Houston State
2/15 at Arkansas State
2/22 vs. Oklahoma
3/1 at Texas Tech
3/22 vs. Baylor
4/5 ARC Conference Championships at Oklahoma
4/12 Gareth Jones Youth Rugby Tournament

Be sure to check out these guys play. Who wouldn’t want to watch a sport that includes tackles, scrums, grubber kicks, and rucks?

As Dowlearn says, “It’s time to show everyone what Aggie Rugby is all about.”

Checked out the match Sat. vs OU. Match ended 27 all, with some good plays by both sides. Always good to see some old friends again. Maybe Andrew can do a write up of the home matches. Next home test on March 22. Hope to see some old players from the past there.
