Aggie Men play Baylor. This should be fun! A lot of us tennis fans miss this rival.

Tied 3-3. Ore down 1-0 in the 3rd set.

Disappointing 4-3 loss to Baylor! Nothing worse than losing to Baylor in anything. We sure do lose a lot of close matches. Ore seemed to have no plan of strategy in the third set. I believe he only one two or three points in the entire third set. Not a great way to finish what was a great overall team match.

So much for hosting doing any favors as far as home court advantage. Men lose to in state Baylor. In state texas upsets Georgia. Glad that we could help out our good friends here in Texas.

Even though we have had a few indoor losses, I think we have improved from last year. Hopefully we can take Illinois down this time.

So happy we won because now no one can use the we just aren't an indoor team anymore. Good luck tomorrow Aggies!

Why do you root against the team slick?
SlickRick
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Has nothing to do with me rooting against the team. I hope the best for the team. Hear is what I don't like and get highly annoyed with from people on these forums for men's tennis especially. Always overhyped! Teams are generally above average to average for the most part with a few below average years since the longhorn took over. Always excuses! Not an indoor team. We are young. We will be better next year. Bla! Bla! Bla! Do I like the fact that A&M hired a longhorn? Hell No!! Does t.u. have any Aggie head coaches? Pretty sure the answer is no. So sorry if not everybody on here wants to make excuses and make the team out to be better than they are or have done in the past. My guess is this year will be a pretty good year, but not great.

The men's tennis team is much like the women's soccer team. We Aggies talk about them like they're elite programs but the reality is they're both tier 2 programs.

They'll usually be ranked in the top 15 and occasionally barely break into the top ten.

As long as the current coaches remain, that's who we'll be - good but never challenging for championships. I think Slick Rick finds that frustrating because the facilities and support are top notch and we've seen teams like Baylor consistently achieve more success.

If Denton and McKinley were ever going to get us to a top 5 level, it would have already happened. It is what it is.

Here at the GTAC, and the As won the doubles point. Currently all over the board in singles. Still in the first set across all matches. I'll keep it updated once I get an update on the scores.

Harrys looking good at one. Just got the first set

Congrats to the Aggies! Two good wins! Amazing how just a week ago we just weren't an indoor team or even last year for that matter and we just beat two good indoor teams. I guess the same players just all of a sudden became good indoor players. Love the 2nd tier program comment! Couldn't have said it better myself. 1st tier players with 2nd tier results would be my assessment.

Much better performance than last year overall. Hopefully things will go well on the road trip this weekend. Our number 1 and 3 doubles are smashing it and the 2 doubles are ok too. Though they are not consistently winning their singles huge improvement has been made by the guys in the bottom of the lineup, so overall things are looking pretty good.

I know it's still early, but Im a little dissapointed with how Efferding and Ore have performed at 3-4. And much like last year we still seem to be struggling at 6.

I agree with this statement. I think our overall package (academics, location, facilities, resources, conference) are probably top-25ish but not top-10 and although that is a very subjective opinion, IF it is correct then being top-15ish every year is slightly overachieving.
That said, as pointed out, Baylor has done more with less.

To be fair, the rules now limit overaged internationals so we're not going to see Baylor or anyone else winning a national championship with a bunch of 25 year-old Germans. We are also not properly situated to recruit a team full of Americans good enough to win it all. That's not a slight - very few schools are and we will be able to get great Texas kids and some out-of-staters, but we're probably not beating USC and UF for CA and FL kids.

I think Denton's "Come play for me and I'll get you to the US Open Main Draw" pitch has run its course. That's not to say we won't keep getting great players that want to play pro tennis, but I don't think many 18 year-olds care that he was a top-10 player. He's certainly not going out there and beating them in baseline games the way Peter Smith at USC does. Not for a long while now.

I'm not saying you have to be the silver fox Pete Carroll of tennis the way Smith is to win a NC, but appearances matter. At the same time Brian Boland at UVA looks like a bridge troll and was a pretty pedestrian player himself but is the hardest working guy in tennis, hires great assistants, and gets it done.

I think Denton does a pretty good job. We could do worse. I do think he'd be better off with a younger assistant fresh off the tour or at least fresh off of a great playing career, or a young go-getter that would travel around the world getting him top international talent.

I think if we're going to beat USC, we're going to have to do it with 3-4 international studs in the lineup. Like it or not, we're never going to be a Final 4 team without some Euro guns up top. Making that happen takes an incredible amount of hard work. With nearly every kid in the world being accessible via internet, Denton's "connections" don't mean as much as they used to when Virginia has some hustling assistant making 15 international recruiting trips per year. You know McKinley and Denton ain't doing that. Traveling to the majors every year and sitting in the stands and calling it recruiting just isn't cutting it. Anyway that's my long-winded opinion.

IMO Denton has the job as long as he wants it if he continues to be as successful as he has been. It would be nice to have someone that hustled more and I do think we could do better. I have no axe to grind with Denton. I wish he wasn't a sip and I wish he wasn't so fat but he seems like a nice enough guy and if he won big I'd like him just the same. I do think someone on the staff under the age of 50 and who doesn't use a continental grip would be a good move.

Very good diagnoses Harry! You couldn't be more correct in every way! The two old farts just ain't getting the job done and never will be an elite program with those two at the helm! Just not going to happen!

I think Harry hit the nail on the head concerning the need to get big time international players especially at one and two.

Denton and McKinley are both excellent coaches and they've been very good at attracting top notch American players but they've really struck out over the years getting top tier international players.
