Texas A&M Men's Swimming & Diving
Most people may have turned down the Christmas music by now, but don't tell that to the Aggie swimming and diving teams.
The Aggies are in the middle of their "Christmas training" period, a rigorous set of practices that wear down a swimmer's body. Naturally this produces tired athletes that post slower times, but it was hard to see on Thursday.
Texas A&M opened 2015 by hosting three other schools, hoping to start the new year on a good note. The Aggie men faced off against Missouri State and the #15 Tennessee Volunteers, while the women, ranked fourth nationally, played host to SMU and #11 Tennessee.
The men's team had a good, but not spectacular, day at the Rec Center. Finishing 1-1 on the day, the Aggies beat Missouri State handily, but were also handled by the Volunteers.
Although Tennessee took most of the events on the day, there were some bright spots for the home team. Gonzalo Carazo Barbero and Jacob Gonzales won the 500-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, respectively. Aggie diver Tyler Henschel took first in 1-meter diving and second in the 3-meter competition.
In contrast to the men, Texas A&M's women's team showed, once again, why it is one of the elite teams in the nation. The girls dominated both SMU and the nationally-ranked Lady Vols from start to finish, showcasing depth that the other two programs couldn't match.
The Aggie swim team won nine out of fourteen events in the pool while Madison Hudkins placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. The women out-paced their opponents with ease, taking the top three spots in multiple events.
The fact that the Aggies could finish their opponents so easily in the midst of the most intense practices of the year is a testament to the kind of program being run in the Natatorium.
"Christmas training" seems to be paying off for the Aggies so far. Here's hoping that the Aggies begin swimming to a different, more up-beat tune after the Yuletide melodies have run their course.
The Aggies hop back into the pool tomorrow, when both teams take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Rec Center.
