I haven't followed any boxing since Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas. Can anyone explain the background on Mayweather vs. Pacquiao? Why haven't they faced each other before? Different leagues, different weight class? And which way is the betting money flowing?

I just saw the Floyd is the 2-1 favorite and the purse is expected to be in the 250 to 300 million dollar range. The agreed payout split is 60% to FM and 40% to MP. That is an absurd amount of money.
Booked plane tickets to Vegas and got comped rooms for the weekend when this was a rumor...can't wait to see the circus atmosphere that weekend!

Pac's for ten plus years trainer is Charlie Roach ! Has had Parkinsons for 10-15 years - now in his 50s .
Still gets in the ring ( with protective gear ) with Pac and other boxers he is training. There is a documentary on him which is very inspiring. Go to google.

Should have fought six years ago in their prime, I think both were avoiding. Mayweather is still too fast for Manny, he will dance away and use combos to score, will not be a knockout.

Yeah, this fight is happening a good 5 years too late. Mayweather will dance and use his speed/quickness to box his way to a comfotable scorecard win. There was a time when I thought Pac had a combination of speed and power to have a very good shot to get a KO, but that time has passed. The wildcard is Pac's southpaw style - Mayweather hasn't had the easiest of times with it in the past, but I don't think that will matter.
As far as why it has taken this long, I think there are a lot of reasons. The biggest two would be Arum-Maywewther pissing match - each with too much pride and ego to be happy with their slice of the pie regardless of how big the pie was. I also think Mayweather was afraid to risk his pound-for-pound reputation vs Pac at Pac's peak. Built his kingdom on being the undefeated champ and I think he always felt he could box his way to a scorecard victory vs anyone, but that Pac near his peak was the one real threat to end a fight early. So when it came time to negotiate, he was always ready with some special barriers and then Arum was too prideful to say "**** it, we want a it bad enough we'll do it anyway".

I agree this fight should have been fought 5-6 years ago. IMO, IF it goes the distance, mayweather will probably win a close split decision. That being said, however, if the fight was a Winner-Takes-All, Has-to be won by a KO, my money would be on Pacquiao

Styles make fights. While I can appreciate Mayweather's ability to defend and win rounds, I've consistently found his fights pretty painful to watch. Sort of like watching Bernard Hopkins over the years. Takes a lot of skill to do what they do, but it can be hard to watch at times, especially against opponents that are defensive-oriented themselves or just don't have the skill to really apply pressure. Now I actually like Hopkins and can't stand Mayweather, but that's a different topic.
