I'm at a tournament and they say their following the "college coaching rules" for in match coaching.

Previously, they allow 90 seconds in between odd numbered games. Is this the same thing or different rules altogether?

The same rules apply for time in between games and points, but rules involving time are regulated very loosely unless it's the state tournament or a really big USTA event. "College" style coaching just allows high school coaches to coach in between points and stay on the court while the match is being played. This is becoming more and more common and I think it's great as long as coaches don't interrupt the flow of the match or try to intimidate opposing players in any ways.

Just one correction....coaches are not allowed to stay on the court during points. The rule specifically states they must coach from outside the court, but can cost between points as long as they don't interrupt the flow of play.

Our region cleared this up last night at the seeding meeting. Coaches cannot stay on court between points like college coaches.

We were allowed on the courts the whole time. Usually, me being there to do that isn't really an option because I'll have4 or 5 matches with my kids ongoing, but we only had one at regionals.

Interesting that you were allowed on court the entire time. Not supposed to be that way. But, when they called it college style coaching, they opened that can of worms. People who know what college style coaching is think of it differently than those that don't. Myself included

I find it interesting that you find this interesting. More often than not it's the norm to see coaches on the court(between the courts by the fences or sometimes even sitting on the benches next to the court). Many districts even have guidelines that allow for this and it's written in their manuals. Sometimes it may have to do more with the facilities. For example, the region 1-6A tournament was held at UTA and if it wasn't allowed to go on the court, coaches would have had to stand in the parking lot and dodge traffic while viewing the match through windscreens. The finals were this morning and there were at least 3 coaches standing on every single court(it seemed a little excessive , but it didn't seem to bother the players at all). At texas tech last spring coaches were told they couldn't stand on the court mainly because they didn't need to... This also goes for state tournaments. How is it that in college matches coaches are allowed to stay on court, but when high school coaches do it you don't consider it college style coaching? There are a lot of coaches in region 1-6A with a lot of championships, a lot of skins on the wall, that have been coaching and playing for a long time that would disagree when you say that they don't know what college style coaching is...

I never said those coaches didn't know what college style coaching is. I am in 1-5A. The term college style coaches does not match what the rule says in the uil handbook. That's my point. And there are special cases like UTA (which is a horrible place for a 6A regional, BTW), where they need to be in court. Some coaches will use that rule to intimidate opposing players.

I have no problem with them sitting on benches. Just wish it was the same everywhere. Uil needs to change the wording of the rule, in my opinion.

I think we have talked about this before, but which HS are you at?

I think it is great when coaches come on the court and coach, the problem is that a good percentage of the HS coaches have no business being out there. bigfoot10s, i consider you a friend to myself and my son, you probably didn't like my son the last two years though, and would have no problem with you going out on court, but some of the coaching that has been relayed to my son, makes both he and I laugh,.

Let's leave names out of this, but you can figure it out.

I got ya. Thought we had him two years ago. Hope they win BD this year.

I enjoyed watching him play. Heck of a competitor, can't ever doubt that.
