The reality right now is that unless something disrupts Mercedes' strategy, they can't be beat. Look at today

Only one retirement

Dont want to pretend to know much but with my hours of Formula 1 Netflix experience I have to assume the 100% sale is the best idea....i am sure any buyer would not want remant Williams people trying to push their weight around. Also, Williams people would probably struggle w/ not having the say they use to

This is what I want to know. Between the cars, the # of people on the teams, all the travel (moving all that technology / pods around), the race car drivers themselves, etc....

Seems like a very high cost sport.

Can someone explain qualifying. Both Ferrari were eliminated in Q2? That mean not racing tomorrow?

Also, the teams don't get to pick the tire they start with on race day? It depends on qualifying times?

They're racing, just starting middle of the pack. So if you finish 12th in q2 you start the race in 12th. If you finish q2 in the top 10, all the times are reset and your q3 time determines starting position.

Q2 determines which tire you start the race on. Whatever time you set your best Q2 time on, that's the set of tires you will start with. That leads to some strategy stuff sometimes. The faster teams will sometimes use a slower tire in q2, where they know they're fast enough to be in the top 10 regardless. That way they begin the race with a longer wearing tire. Then they use their fastest tires in q3.

By far the best track. Eau Rouge used to be quite a challenge, but now it is just flat out. It still looks amazing though. Found this clip a while back showing relative speed of F1 cars to GT cars. This was pre-hybrid and turbo days when the cars sounded a lot better:

Ferrari out of the points. They are a hot mess about right now.

I enjoy some of the events surrounding the races and some of the "story-lines" but wow yesterday and apparently this season has been pathetic. No other sport focuses on 4th - 12th place over 1st - 3rd because 1 through 3 is set week after week after week....

Agree. Qualifying is a given for Mercedes. Once they get away cleanly at the line the race isn't in doubt until (maybe) the last few laps if they haven't managed the tires well.

Q1 was probably more entertaining than the race will be tomorrow

When I turned on qualifying highlights today my 12 year oled daughter said it's always Hamilton, then Bottas and Verstappen. Same every time ...

Ha. My 10 yo daughter is always amazed when she checks in on a race and Magnussen is still in.

My wife made the comment this morning that Sainz might not exactly be upgrading his ride by going to Ferrari next year

Didn't they show Sainz last week putting his head in his hands and the commentator assumed it was due to how Ferrari is performing and knowing that is where he is headed.

Not sure what Ferrari's issue is but they are definitely middle of the pack at best. Far behind Red Bull and probably fair to say Maclaren has a solid advantage over them too.

Hope Ferrari turns it around.

Ferrari has been on the decline ever since Brawn, Byrne, and Schumacher left, and if you remember before that era they were very much a poor performing team with the one off exception in '90 with Prost.

Interesting. I am new to the sport so not too familiar with the history. Don't hate me lol but my recent knowledge is from the Netflix series and it seemed like they put them on a pedestal just behind Mercedes but that seems to be wrong.

No worries. They are the most beloved team in the sport, and historically they've had the biggest budget. I'm going off memory here, so I might be off a year ir two, but after Jody Schekter's championship in 1979 it took them until 2000 to win a drivers championship with Schumacher. He won 5 in a row with them. They won one more with Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 which was their last.
