The Aggie women has a young team and are rebuilding again after their SEC dominance winning four straight SEC 2016-2019.
A top 5 finish will be commendable. Swimswam projects the Aggies to finish 9th

The men are projected to finish 7th.
It's hard to replace Shane Casas but I think we can get better than 7th.
We must do well in the relays.
I know our divers will score lots of points.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what does the GU stand for in "Texas A&M-GU" on the psych sheet? I'm guessing it doesn't have anything to do with galveston campus.

200m relay results

Women
8th place - 1.37.60 - season best but outside the B cut time of 1.37.05.
Two second improvement from their previous season's best time. I think we needed to be a second faster on the breaststroke leg to qualify to NCAA. Still a very young team with a freshman, two sophomores and 1 junior that swam on the team. I think with a couple of last chance meet they might be able to push to at least get a B qualifying time

Men
5th place in 1:24.00 which is under the Automatic qualifying time to NCAA of 1:24.22.
All legs on this relay should be back next year which is good for the team

Women 800m free

6th place finish in a B cut time of 7:04.12.
Chloe Stepanek led off the Aggies in a 1.42.40 which is a school record bettering her 1.42.89 from last year. The other swimmers on the relay didn't split very well (1.47s)

We lead the standings after day 1 because of the 63 points from diving (10 plus points less than the seedings)

I agree the women team has fallen off over the last couple of years. This year we were further short changed by both seniors and captains Carolyn Thiel and Kyle Powers (previous NCAA qualifiers) unable to compete coupled with the fact that none of our seniors from last year came back for a 5th year because of the additional eligibility given to many sports. Many top swimmers from other school came back and is contributing hugely to their team. We had to rely of our young class made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

Over the years we would get maybe 1 or two top 20 prospect but that hasn't happen for some years. We also depended a lot on many overseas swimmers to join the team. However the coaches in recent past have recruited quite number of swimmers from Texas. While many of them may not be top recruits, Steve continues really develop average swimmers in to very good and great swimmers.

Our strong event over the years were the breaststroke and IM events however we have fallen off in these events recently and many schools now have top breast and IMers.

This young team has done well so far even though they are in 6th place. They came into the meet without any NCAA qualifiers and so far have qualified 5 or 6 and a couple might be on the bubble. Also a couple of relays. So many PBs from the swimmers this year which is good for the team moving forward

I think next year could be an upward turning point again for us as we develop and continue to add depth to the roster

While I know Steve is aging and would eventually be replaced. The fact remains he has done a lot with the athletes he currently has. At this time the team is not deep enough to win an SEC championship, but I know next year they will be more competitive.

I have looked at the progress of all the women swimmers who came here in the last two years, and I have compiled the summary below. You can see the improvements for most of them from the time they came to Aggieland until the SEC 2022 championship and the season is not done yet.

So far, we may have qualified about 6 or 7 athletes and 4 relays to NCAA. We did this without our two senior captains (not competing) and without any 5th year seniors. We also have another 5 or so on the bubble and others who didn't compete at SEC and would be looking to improve their times at this week LAST CHANCE MEET in College Station.

Agree - he is a phenomenal coach that gets the most out of his swimmers...but why start with average talent and make them good / great. Why not recruit exceptional talent and make them generational. Seems like he and his staff dig themselves into a hole by the way they recruit...
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not a single swimmer mentioned in this article about the #7 recruiting class in the country from 2018, which comprises the senior class, was on the SEC team. That's a pretty massive hole to fill for any conference team to just have an entire top 10 recruiting class disappear.
