BBRex and CE..
I know it is a tough call, but I still think it was the right one. It does not matter whether you impede the goalie intentionally or not. In this picture...Terry doesn't even have his eye on the ball...but he does have his left arm around the goalie's neck and right shoulder with both of his feet on the ground. You can see both of Campbell's arms in front of him...he was not committing the foul.

Of course, I am an ex-goalie, so I definately have a bias towards goalies!

What a great final! The home team vs Cinderella. Should be great!

That picture is a good indication that there was a foul there. I guess they have to come out of that goalie box before they can get the hell knocked out of them.

I'm sticking with my pick (back on 1st page of this thread):

"The Ports were unbelievable as U21s, but their bones are aging. So, I'll pick Portugal in their last chance for this group of players to win."

However, I never thought the Greeks would be able to hold on the way they have, and never considered them for finalists. They deserve a lot of credit for finding ways to get wins.

After two days of being unable to post, I'm back and I need my fix.

Portugal has so much going for it its unreal. They are playing well, have home support and to top it all off they can negate one of Greece's main advantages. Portugal will be sure not to overlook them as many teams have as they have already done it once. If Greece wins this game, it will be quite possible the greatest upset or string of upsets in all of sport.

I won't be able to watch it as I will be flying to Mexico, but I honestly won't be missing it too much. I invision a very tentative match initially by the Portuguese and defense, defense, defense by the Greeks which doesn't make for inspiring soccer. Portugal wins 2-0 and finally wins some silver for the "Golden Generation"

On a side note, what the hell is Ronaldo looking at in that picture? He looks like a gazelle who just spotted a lion lying in the brush.

Dre:
Ronaldo has that "Oh ----" look in his eyes. Probably was horrified that England was getting the winner.

I'll have to disagree. The picture doesn't show the complete play, just a moment.

On a side note, I never saw Portugal set the ball down and put it into play. Did anyone notice that?

If you see a replay of the goal being disallowed, and you see the action in front of the goal-opposed to England celebrating-you'll see Urs Meier running up towards the goal. The ball is placed on the ground, and the Portuguese restart play. Things were happening so fast at that moment, it was easy for the camera providing the tv feed to miss the restart.

Another question: Where is Meier in that picture? I realize its a tight shot but was he in a good position to see the play? I haven't had a chance to see the replay so I don't know, but I do know that the linesman had a clear shot down the endline and saw nothing wrong because he started to trot down the touch line for the restart.

Meier was just outside of the picture. He saw an arm hit the 'keeper, so he called a foul.

Euro 2004 Final:

GREECE 1 PORTUGAL 0. In a game that won't go down as a classic, the Greeks have 2 shots on goal. One is a header from a corner kick, and they score, in the 57th minute. The Greeks spend the rest of the match defending like Spartans. The Portuguese have a couple of near misses, but that's it. I felt that the Portuguese players tended to hang on to the ball a little too long when trying to create something against a packed defense.

The Greeks had never won a game at the finals of a major tournament, and had scored only one goal. This was simply amazing-beat the hosts twice and knock out the champions. They weren't pretty to watch, but they did what they had to do, and succeeded.

The next Euro will be jointly hosted by Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

Unbelievable. Greece wins Euro 2004, Porto wins the CL. What a strange year.

To top off the Golden Generation's misery, the earn the misfortune of losing twice to the most unlikely victor in a major tournament. It kinda makes me laugh...

Good for the Greeks! But...

I hope it's not a sign of the beautiful game regressing due to the teachings of the greeks and their man to man marking and great defensive team play.

The great attacking teams (Holland, France, Czechs, and Portugal) all fell prey to the Greeks and an organized German coach. I hope it's not a sign of a trend away from attractive attacking football!
